Kreuzberg combines a distinctive park landscape with art and district history. When looking for accommodation in Kreuzberg, you can first consider whether parks, art or historical themes should be the focus of your trip. Examples range from Viktoriapark and Görlitzer Park to museums and memorial sites.

Parks with different character

With Kreuzberg hill, Viktoriapark includes Berlin’s highest elevation within the inner city. Its features include a waterfall, Wolfsschlucht gorge and rocky, mountainous terrain. Görlitzer Park, by contrast, offers lawns for relaxing as well as several sports and playgrounds. If you’re travelling with children, the playgrounds are a practical point to consider when planning your day; sports facilities and lawns add other ways to spend time outdoors.

The history of Görlitzer Park is also part of its character: it was created in the early 1990s on the site of the former Görlitz railway station. Its origins connect today’s parkland with the site’s former use, giving the place its own historical dimension.

Art and history

The FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum documents the history of the district. The Berlinische Galerie is a public museum of modern art, photography and architecture. Since 2004, it has been based in Kreuzberg in a converted former glass warehouse. This brings together different cultural interests: the history of the district as well as modern art, photography and architecture. The gallery building’s former use as a glass warehouse is also part of its architectural history.

The grounds of the “Topography of Terror” include an outdoor walking tour with 15 exhibition stations. Another historical testimony is the roughly 200-metre-long remaining section of the Berlin Wall on Niederkirchnerstraße. It marked the boundary between the districts of Mitte (East Berlin) and Kreuzberg (West Berlin). This account of the border makes the city’s former division tangible at a specific district boundary.

More park profiles in the Berlin destination

The wider Berlin destination offers more ways to spend time outdoors. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park and is suitable for walks, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. These Berlin park profiles broaden the choice of activities without equating the distinct character of each place.

Volkspark Friedrichshain is also part of the wider Berlin destination. It has sports grounds, playgrounds, outdoor cafés and a barbecue area for summer days. Two small artificial hills are made up of rubble from demolished World War II bunkers and buildings destroyed in the war; they offer views of central Berlin. The hills are called “Mont Klamott” and “Kleiner Bunkerberg”. In this wider Berlin context, outdoor activities and traces of history sit side by side, while Kreuzberg itself has its own distinctive focus on parks, art and district history.
