Discover Jamlitz: Ponds, trails and history
Accommodation in Jamlitz
Jamlitz reveals itself through its waters, hiking trails and historic sites. With Schäferteich, the village lies in a basin; the Byhletal valley is also part of the landscape.
Ponds and hiking trails
The hiking routes offer specific guidance along streams and ponds. On the eastern edge, they follow the Splau stream and the Mühlen, Schenker, Meiers and Chaussee ponds fed by it. They run west of Radduschsee and south of Schäferteich to the Byhle stream, then through the Byhletal valley past the trout farm. Together, these routes give a picture of Jamlitz shaped by named bodies of water rather than a single viewpoint.
Fishing is also possible at two locations in Jamlitz: the Schlaubefisch ponds and the trout farm. For planning purposes, these offer different options: walking routes through a landscape shaped by streams and ponds, or fishing at the specifically named spots. The trout farm features both as a fishing location and as a landmark in the Byhletal valley.
Place of remembrance and transport history
The memorial tour offers another way to explore the village’s history. It takes you through the former site of a satellite camp of Sachsenhausen concentration camp, built in 1943/1944. The former barracks camp was used successively as a concentration camp, an SS penal camp, a refugee camp and an internment camp. This sequence makes the history of the site a distinct and significant subject for a trip to Jamlitz.
The railway lines also provide two clearly distinct historical milestones. The Frankfurt (Oder)–Cottbus railway line, built in 1876, was closed in 1996. The Spreewaldbahn also terminated in Jamlitz and was discontinued in 1960. These details refer to two different lines and thus tell different chapters of the village’s transport history.
Dahme-Spreewald as the wider destination
The wider travel destination of Dahme-Spreewald offers further nature and culture themes. Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and includes more than 100 lakes. In the district of Dahme-Spreewald, more than 1,000 kilometres of well-developed, fully signposted cycle paths connect landscapes and destinations in the Spreewald and Dahme Lake District. Check route conditions before setting out on a specific cycling trip.
Other examples offer their own highlights: Boat or canoe trips depart from Schlepzig harbour on a 3 km circular route through the Spreewald village. As services may be seasonal, check the dates in advance. The Funkerberg Museum is located at the authentic site of the first German radio broadcast, which was transmitted from Königs Wusterhausen on 22 December 1920 with a Christmas concert.
When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: Jamlitz offers the ponds, hikes and historical themes described here, while Dahme-Spreewald, as the wider travel destination, offers further nature, cycling, boating and cultural experiences.
