Discover Dahme-Spreewald: Lakes, Culture and History
Accommodation in Dahme-Spreewald
The Dahme Lake District, together with the Spreewald, is part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. Its scenic, historical and cultural attractions give the region its character. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different options: you can experience lakes and landscapes, explore the area by bike, or learn about life in times gone by.
Lakes, cycle paths and nature watching
The “Dahme-Heideseen” Nature Park lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and encompasses more than 100 lakes. It gives the region a distinctly landscape-focused character. The “Buchenhain” nature trail also offers a close-up view of the surroundings: it leads to a 7 m-high observation tower with views of the landscape.
If you prefer longer rides, the district of Dahme-Spreewald has more than 1,000 km of well-maintained, fully signposted cycle paths. They connect landscapes and destinations in the Spreewald and the Dahme Lake District. Check the conditions on the specific route before setting out. This gives you two different ways to explore the area: a cycling tour through the landscape or a trip to a particular destination, such as the observation tower.
Experience everyday life and technology through history
The Schlepzig Farm Museum depicts small-scale farming life in an authentically furnished home. The museum is housed in a fully preserved rural building complex dating from 1818. The buildings and furnishings give your visit a distinct historical context.
Another way to explore history awaits you at the Funkerberg Museum. It is located at the authentic site of Germany’s first radio broadcast: on 22 December 1920, a Christmas concert was broadcast from Königs Wusterhausen. Regular demonstrations also give visitors the chance to see a 1,000 hp Deutz diesel engine in action. The museum thus combines broadcasting history with a technical demonstration; check the dates of the demonstrations before your visit.
In Mittenwalde, the Salzmarkt 5 Museum tells the story of the town’s more than 700-year history in a restored half-timbered house. The fieldstone church in Bestensee offers a different historical perspective: it is a testament to medieval village churches and was probably built towards the end of the 14th century.
Weigh up the places and experiences
Schlepzig harbour is the starting point for punt or paddle-boat trips on a 3 km circular route through the Spreewald village. As services may be seasonal, it is a good idea to check in advance whether your preferred trip is available on your travel dates. This is a different kind of outing from visiting a museum or taking a walking tour.
On guided tours of Mittenwalde, you can discover the historic farming town. The sights mentioned include St. Maurice’s Church and the local history museum. Advance registration and a minimum group size are required for these tours. The tower of St. Maurice’s Church has viewing platforms at a height of around 50 m; the climb involves about 200 steps. If you would like to visit the tower, check current access arrangements in advance.
Königs Wusterhausen Palace is another destination with a specific visiting requirement: it can only be visited on a guided tour. Visitors learn about life in the palace, the royal living quarters of Frederick William I and his era. By contrast, the guided tours of Mittenwalde focus on the historic character of the farming town and its listed sights.
Find accommodation to match your interests
Then compare the location of your accommodation with the places you would like to visit. That way, your choice reflects the kind of trip you have planned, without assuming that one type of stay suits everyone. For guided tours, tower visits and demonstrations, it is particularly important to check the relevant participation or access information before your visit.
