Röderland can be explored in Saathain through its river landscape and cultural offerings. Saathain lies west of Elsterwerda at the confluence of the Schwarze Elster and Große Röder rivers. In the surrounding area, floodplain forests along the Schwarze Elster, the Röder and the Röderkanal shape the landscape. There are also exhibitions and cultural events in Saathain, as well as cycling and hiking tours along the Grödel-Elsterwerdaer Floßkanal. This gives you a range of options for a trip where nature and culture can both play a part.

Exhibitions and Events in Saathain

Exhibitions are held in the newly refurbished rooms of the converted Saathain estate. Cultural events also take place in Saathain’s former stables. The two offerings provide different ways to experience the area: you can visit an exhibition or plan your stay around an event. If a specific date is important to your plans, check the relevant event details before your visit.

Cycling, Hiking and Fishing Along the Floßkanal

The Grödel-Elsterwerdaer Floßkanal runs through Röderland and is now used for cycling and hiking tours. It is also considered a paradise for anglers. There are therefore several activities to choose from: a cycling tour, a hike or fishing.

When planning your trip and accommodation, it is worth deciding first what you would most like to focus on: should Saathain’s cultural offerings be the deciding factor, or are you planning cycling and hiking tours along the Floßkanal, or perhaps fishing?

More Places to Explore in the Wider Elbe-Elster Destination

The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers other distinct attractions. The F60 visitor mine is in Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors to the mine can explore the nearby Bergheider See by bicycle or Segway, or take a walk along its long beach. This excursion combines a visit to the visitor mine with different ways to experience the lake.

Industrial heritage also offers a range of places to visit. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory; visitors can experience functioning historic technology and discover steam engines there. The Plessa power station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure. Visitors can view authentic power station technology from the 1920s there. The guided “Weg der Kohle” (“Path of Coal”) tour passes through the outdoor bunkers, boiler house, turbine hall, control room and transformer area. If you are interested, check the current booking conditions for the tour.

Nature enthusiasts can take excursions in the Elbe-Elster region with a ranger from the nature conservation service: visitors can learn to identify bird calls, find rare plants and observe animals; dates may vary. The museums also each have their own focus. Four important museums in Elbe-Elster district have formed a joint museum network since January 2015. The Mühlberg 1547 Museum focuses on the meeting of armies in 1547, which shaped the course of the Reformation, and holds the European Heritage Label. This selection can help you choose a focus for planning the rest of your trip, whether nature, technological history or museums.
