Schlieben: Kellerstraße, Wine and Moienmarkt
Accommodation in Schlieben
Schlieben showcases its winemaking history in historic cellars and along a themed wine trail. The annual Moienmarkt folk and local heritage festival is another highlight.
Winemaking and cellars in Schlieben
Schlieben’s historic Kellerstraße (Cellar Street) has more than 30 wine cellars, most of which date from the 16th century. The approximately 1.5-kilometre wine trail offers insights into winemaking in general and in Schlieben. The two attractions have different focuses: Kellerstraße links wine with local history, while the trail covers growing wine in both a broader and local context.
Seasonal options from May to October include vineyard tours by prior arrangement, as well as tastings in the vineyard and in the historic wine cellar on Kellerstraße. Please agree on your preferred date in advance. This lets you choose between following the trail independently and arranging a tour or tasting ahead of time.
The Moienmarkt is an annual folk and local heritage festival that adds a distinct cultural highlight alongside the region’s winemaking. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific festival dates in advance.
More to explore in the wider Elbe-Elster destination
The wider Elbe-Elster destination offers more than Schlieben’s winemaking, extending to industrial heritage. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory. Visitors can experience working historic machinery and discover steam engines there. The Plessa power station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure. Authentic power station technology from the 1920s can be seen there. The guided “Path of Coal” tour leads through the outdoor bunker, boiler house, turbine floor, control room and transformer area. Check the current booking conditions for the tour in advance.
Nature and landscapes offer further ways to explore the region. The F60 visitor mine is in the Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors to the mine can explore nearby Bergheider See by bicycle or Segway, or take a walk along its long beach. On excursions with a ranger from the Nature Conservation Service, visitors can identify birdsong, find rare plants and observe animals in the Elbe-Elster region. As dates may vary, check the current options in advance.
The Mühlberg 1547 Museum is dedicated to the meeting of the armies in 1547, which shaped the course of the Reformation, and has been awarded the European Heritage Label. Since January 2015, four major museums in the Elbe-Elster district have formed a joint museum network. Regional routes are another way to discover more: the 65-kilometre Apple Route includes a guided tour of the pomological garden in Döllingen; check current dates in advance. The Elster Cycle Tour takes a different route, following a circuit past old mills and through the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park.
