Discover Wustermark: History, Nature and Views
Accommodation in Wustermark
Wustermark offers a range of ways to spend your stay: architectural history in the village church and the 1936 Olympic Village, the observation tower on Finkenberg, and nature and honey-related attractions in Elstal and the Döberitzer Heide.
Architectural History in Wustermark and Elstal
Wustermark village church was built in 1703 using older building materials. The square tower with its Baroque curved dome was added in 1793; the wooden interior ceiling, shaped like a barrel vault, dates from 1885. The terms describe different forms: the curved dome is the tower’s sweeping roof, while the barrel vault describes the shape of the ceiling.
The 1936 Olympic Village in Elstal offers a different perspective on history. Many old buildings have been renovated; their construction still reveals how the athletes of the time lived there and prepared for competitions. The buildings themselves, as well as the athletes’ lives and competition preparations, are therefore central to the historical interest of the site.
Views and Nature Experiences
Hiking trails that converge on the observation tower on Finkenberg make it a clear destination. When visibility is good, the panoramic view extends as far as the television tower at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, 25 kilometres away. The tower and its trails therefore offer two concrete points to consider when planning: the route to the tower and the view from the top.
The Döberitzer Heide Nature Experience Centre and Sielmann’s Döberitzer Heide Nature Landscape are separate points of interest in the Döberitzer Heide. Admission to both places is free; check the operator’s current conditions before your visit.
Elstal: Honey and the Crafts Market
The Bee Museum at Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Elstal offers insights into the world of honey producers. Check current visiting arrangements before planning a visit. At the crafts market in Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Elstal, you can browse and buy souvenirs or gifts to take home. Elstal thus caters to different interests: the museum focuses on honey, while the market offers the chance to browse and buy gifts to take home.
Havelland as the Wider Destination
Birdwatching and cycling are also part of the wider Havelland destination. On the south shore of Lake GĂĽlpe, a roughly 1.5-kilometre-long educational trail with illustrated information boards invites visitors to observe birds. During spring and autumn migration, up to 100,000 geese and hundreds of cranes gather there, along with numerous wading birds, ducks and grey herons. The season makes an important difference: these large bird gatherings are associated with the spring and autumn migrations.
For custom cycling routes, you can use the numbered-junction signposting system in Havelland. The Havelland Cycle Route runs through the Havelländisches Luch via Nauen, Ribbeck and Rathenow to the Westhavelland Nature and Star Park. It is mostly paved, flat and pleasant to ride. When planning your trip, you can therefore give separate consideration to specific destinations in Wustermark and the independent nature and cycling attractions of the wider Havelland region.
