Nature at the Weisen Wetland

At the Weisen Wetland, you can observe fish, amphibians, dragonflies and other pond inhabitants from the benches. A wooden table and two benches allow visitors to enjoy a picnic with food they have brought along. As the condition of the site may change, it is best to check before your visit.

More topics in the wider destination of Prignitz

The wider destination of Prignitz expands the thematic scope to include other natural and cultural attractions. The Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Flusslandschaft Elbe – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within Prignitz district. At the NABU Visitor Centre in Rühstädt, the “Weltenbummler Adebar” exhibition focuses on the white stork. Other offerings include a live broadcast of stork chicks being fed, project days for school classes, holiday programmes, village tours and themed events for different age groups. At the Burg Lenzen Visitor Centre, the focus is instead on the natural and cultural history of the river landscape, floodplain ecology, flood protection and the biosphere reserve. Lenzen’s 1,000-year history can also be experienced there through its cultural history. This allows you to explore nature, environmental education and regional history as distinct areas of interest.

Cycling and enjoying the water

Prignitz’s cycling network comprises 1,100 kilometres of designated routes; 17 recommended cycle tours take in regional attractions and special features. As network information may change, check the latest route details before planning a specific tour. In Blüthen, a cycling church is located directly on the 410-kilometre Elbe-Müritz Circular Route, which connects the river and lakes. The Berlin-Wilsnack Pilgrimage Route passes through Plattenburg; the Bishop’s Tour also stops at Plattenburg Castle. These examples represent different kinds of routes: a designated cycling network, a long circular route, and a pilgrimage route and tour stop.

Water activities are also part of what Prignitz has to offer: excursions on passenger boats are possible on lakes and on the Havel and Elbe rivers, and there are also swimming spots. Some activities may be seasonal. Experienced paddlers can take tours on the Elbe that include wildlife watching in the biosphere reserve. The BUND Visitor Centre in Burg Lenzen offers guided canoe tours on the Löcknitz for families, adults and school classes. They combine experiencing nature with environmental education; dates are arranged on request.

Cultural attractions in Prignitz

In BlĂĽthen, the parsonage museum uses the parish archive, with holdings dating back to the 17th century, and the estate of Karl and Gerlinde GroĂź to tell the story of life in an evangelical parsonage in the past. The Prignitz Village Museum features an old classroom and products of traditional crafts. A different perspective on history is offered by the Late Gothic hall church of St. Nikolai in the medieval pilgrimage town of Bad Wilsnack, widely known as the Church of the Holy Blood: its furnishings include a wooden Holy Blood shrine from the 15th century with painted folding doors and medieval stained glass, regarded as the most significant collection of its kind in Brandenburg.

The “Alte Burg” City Museum in Wittenberge traces the town’s development from a small farming town to an industrial city, including the production of Singer and Veritas sewing machines and the transition from wartime to the GDR. The 13th-century Stone Gate houses an exhibition on its former use as a prison, the Roaring Twenties and the Elbe in Wittenberge. The Pritzwalk Museum Factory explores industrialisation in rural areas; visitors can get hands-on in the museum print shop and hand-weaving workshop. The attractions thus range from church and village history to industry and crafts.
