Perleberg combines wildlife watching with city exploration and cultural-historical details. At the wildlife park, native and exotic species meet an unusual building such as the Knaggenhaus; there are also themed guided tours and a digital tour. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: should Perleberg itself be the main destination, or would you also like to explore other themes and places in the Prignitz region?

Wildlife park and distinctive details of the city

Perleberg Wildlife Park is home to native and exotic animal species in modern enclosures, some of which visitors can enter. The mix of different animal species and enclosure types defines the park’s character. Individual animal presentations may change; the large bear enclosure was inaugurated in 1996 and is one of the wildlife park’s notable historical features.

The Knaggenhaus also offers a striking point of interest for exploring the city: its name refers to 13 carved figures, considered unique in northern Germany. A look at these figures adds an architectural discovery and a distinctive cultural-historical note to the wildlife park visit.

Explore Perleberg with a guide or on your own

Perleberg’s tourist information office books themed city walks. Visitors who want to explore the city independently can use the digital city tour on the municipal website or at information pillars in the city centre. This gives you two different ways to find your bearings: a themed guided tour and a digital tour to use on your own.

For cycling trip planning, the long-distance cycle routes “Historic Town Centres 3” and “Tour Brandenburg” are also associated with Perleberg. The tourist information office also offers a taste of local produce: as of 28 March 2025, it sold the liqueur products Rolandtrunk and Scharfer Roland from the Wittstock liqueur distillery. Availability may change, so it is best to check before your visit whether the products are still available.

The Prignitz region: routes, water and culture

The Prignitz region provides a broader regional setting for planning your trip. It has 1,100 kilometres of designated cycle routes and 17 recommended cycling tours focused on local attractions and distinctive features of the area. The Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Flusslandschaft Elbe – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within the Prignitz district. When planning a specific tour, it is worth checking the latest route information.

Water-based activities also vary by type: the Elbe in the Prignitz offers tours for experienced paddlers, with wildlife watching in the biosphere reserve. Passenger boat excursions are available on lakes and on the Havel and Elbe rivers; there are also bathing waters in the Prignitz region. Some boat services may operate seasonally. For a guided nature activity, the BUND Visitor Centre at Burg Lenzen offers canoe tours on the Löcknitz for families, adults and school classes. They combine nature experiences with environmental education; dates can be arranged on request.

Cultural-historical attractions in the Prignitz include the late Gothic hall church of St. Nikolai in Bad Wilsnack, widely known as the Wunderblutkirche. It stands in a medieval pilgrimage town and houses a wooden shrine of the Holy Blood from the 15th century, with painted folding doors. The church also contains medieval stained glass, considered the most significant collection of its kind in Brandenburg. The Museumsfabrik Pritzwalk offers a different perspective on history: its permanent exhibition explores industrialisation in rural areas, and visitors can get hands-on in the museum printing workshop and hand-weaving workshop.

For families and visitors of different ages, the NABU Visitor Centre in Rühstädt offers the exhibition “Weltenbummler Adebar” about the white stork, as well as a live broadcast of stork chicks being fed. The programme also includes project days for school classes, holiday programmes, village tours and themed events for different age groups.
