Schönfeld combines a 13th-century fieldstone church with a local history dating back to around 1200. Walks through meadows and fields, along with the Klockow swimming pool, complement the cultural and historical focus with outdoor and waterside experiences. This offers a range of interests to consider when planning a trip: architecture, the historical development of the village, paths through the countryside, and a visit to the swimming pool. If you are looking for accommodation, the mix of culture, nature, and water you want is a helpful starting point.

Schönfeld Church and its building history

Schönfeld Church is a solid fieldstone building from the 13th century. Its stepped design consists of a wide west tower, a narrower nave, a recessed chancel, and an apse. The different widths and setbacks clearly articulate the building’s structure. The interior also brings together traces from different periods: it was completely renovated, during which remains of frescoes were discovered in the altar area and partially uncovered. The church was reconsecrated during a service on September 27, 1992. Its architectural form, traces of frescoes, and reconsecration offer different points of interest for anyone interested in church architecture and its history.

Early settlement and local history

Schönfeld’s settlement history dates back to the period of German colonization around 1200. In 1375, Lüdicke von der Berge and Kuno Schwanebeke held free estates in Schönfeld. Records from 1541 and 1608 associate the von Berg family with the village, two manor houses, fishing, and the fields. The village’s history therefore encompasses not only the settlement itself, but also ownership and the use of land and waterways. At the end of the Thirty Years’ War, much of Schönfeld was deserted and devastated. A later biographical point of interest is Carl Büchsel, who was born in Schönfeld in 1803. The chronology thus ranges from the beginnings of settlement through changes in ownership to the consequences of war.

Meadow paths, a megalithic tomb, and a swimming pool

Walks through the surrounding meadows and fields are considered rewarding in every season. One possible excursion destination is an elk and reindeer farm near Kleptow. Another point of interest in the landscape is the megalithic tomb below Galgenberg. The area around the tomb is designated a natural monument; check its protection status locally before visiting.

The Klockow swimming pool in the municipality of Schönfeld has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a 3-metre diving tower, sunbathing lawns, and a separate paddling pool. This provides a specific aquatic attraction for trip planning alongside walks. If the swimming pool influences your choice of where to stay, check the facilities before your visit, as features of the pool may change.

Bus connection and the Uckermark region

Bus route 474 connects Schönfeld Mitte with Gartz, running via Hohenreinkendorf and Tantow. As routes and timetables may change, check the timetable before travelling.

The Uckermark provides a wider regional setting: it is a hilly region between Berlin and Szczecin, with historic villages, churches, manor houses, cobbled streets, and historic town centres. The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park lies amid the lake-rich, gently rolling Uckermark and includes many clear-water lakes, kettle holes, and bogs. The park has more than 150 kilometres of water trails and over 600 kilometres of signposted hiking trails.
