Biberach an der Riß: Discover the city’s history and trails
Accommodation in Biberach an der Riß
Discover Biberach an der Riß through its city history, distinctive viewpoints and several themed routes. The museum, the buildings at Holzmarkt and the routes through the city each offer a different focus—from collections and architecture to nature and cycling routes.
City history at the museum and Holzmarkt
Biberach Museum is located in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit and presents significant collections in four departments: natural history, archaeology, history and art. Highlights include the original studios of Munich animal painters Anton Braith and Christian Mali. The museum brings together a range of subjects, from nature and archaeology to the city’s history and art.
Three distinctive buildings stand together at Holzmarkt: the late Gothic Salt Storehouse, built in 1513; the Baroque Dinglinger House, associated with the renowned Biberach goldsmith; and the former patrician residence Strölin House, dating from 1590. Their dates and architectural styles give each building its own historical context. Together, they show the variety of architectural influences around the square.
Themed routes with different focuses
Biberach lies directly on the Danube–Lake Constance Cycle Route, which connects Ulm with Lake Constance. The German Half-Timbered House Route, a themed cycling route about 1,000 kilometres long, also passes directly through Biberach. The Upper Swabian Mill Route and the Baroque Route both run directly through the city, too. For planning, the comparison provides a useful guide: the Danube–Lake Constance Cycle Route is defined by its connection between Ulm and Lake Constance, while the Half-Timbered House Route is specifically a themed cycling route with an approximate total length.
Views and routes in the city and its surroundings
The Gigelberg and Schillerhöhe offer views across Biberach. The city also has a nature trail, while Biberach hiking trails run through the outlying districts. Around Biberach, well-maintained hiking trails lead through Burren Forest, along the Riß River and in the footsteps of the Way of St. James. This lets you choose between a nature trail in the city, routes in the outlying districts and hiking trails in the surrounding area.
More cultural attractions in the wider Biberach destination
The wider Biberach destination also has cultural attractions in their own right. The Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach brings six centuries of history to life. More than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times gone by. The Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church was built from 1728 to 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Steinhausen lies on the Way of St. James, which runs from Nuremberg via Nördlingen, Ulm and Biberach, then on to Bad Waldsee, Weingarten, Einsiedeln and Le Puy, and finally to Santiago in Spain.
In Laupheim, the Museum of the History of Christians and Jews explores three centuries of shared life between Christian and Jewish residents. At Schussenried Monastery, the magnificent library hall in the Baroque convent building is considered one of the most beautiful library halls in southern Germany. The Mönchsrother Path follows the trail of the former monastic settlement; its history is presented on 24 information panels. For a different perspective, the planetarium presents multimedia shows about astronomy and space travel, changing every three months.
Nature is also part of the wider Biberach destination: the Wackelwald is close to the spa gardens on the edge of Bad Buchau and is open to visitors. The attractions therefore cover a wide range of themes, from a museum village and church architecture to history, astronomy and an freely accessible natural area.
