Wain lies in the upper Weihung Valley and is nestled in the Holzstöcke, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in southeastern Baden-Württemberg. The Weihung also rises here: the river flows for 30 kilometres before joining the Danube near Ulm. The forest and river offer two distinct points of reference for the landscape—from Wain’s setting in a wooded natural area to the Weihung’s route to the Danube.

Local History at the Castle and Bethlehem

The centrally located castle recalls the change of ownership that followed the sale of the town in 1771. Another historical landmark is the district of Bethlehem, first mentioned in 1529. Two signs unveiled on 8 December 2013 mark Bethlehem. The visible themes of local history therefore range from the change of ownership in the 18th century to the district’s earliest recorded mentions.

St Michael’s Church and Protestant History

St Michael’s Church was rebuilt in 1688 after the old church had been demolished. Its character combines Protestant Baroque with Protestant baptismal theology. Inside the church, the Exulantentafel (Exile Plaque) commemorates Protestant families who left Arriach in Carinthia in the 17th century. It thus brings a specific story of migration into the history of the town and its church. The congregation in Wain is considered one of the oldest Protestant congregations in Upper Swabia. Visitors interested in history will find several points of interest here: the church building, baptismal theology and the account of the families’ departure.

Golf, Training and Other Ways to Stay Active

The Reischenhof golf course in Wain has 27 holes across three nine-hole courses. They can be combined for 18-hole rounds, and a 27-hole day of golf is also possible. The course is set in Upper Swabia’s moraine landscape, with hilly terrain and changing slopes. Choosing between 18 and 27 holes lets you decide the length of your golf day, while the landscape provides a distinct local setting for the game.

For another way to stay active, Propuls fitness studio in Wain offers circuit, machine, free-weight and mobility training, as well as a range of classes. The studio also has a sauna area and the StĂĽble bistro, with an outdoor area in summer. Golf and training offer different ways to spend an active day; the bistro and sauna area round out what Propuls has to offer.

Getting There and More Cultural Highlights

If travelling by car, take the route from the B 30 via Laupheim and Schwendi to Großschafhausen, then continue towards Wain. The turn-off for Wain is in the wooded stretch between Dietenheim and Hörenhausen. Check the latest road signs and route information before setting out.

The wider destination of Biberach also offers further historical perspectives. The Oberschwäbisches Museumsdorf Kürnbach comprises more than 30 historic buildings and presents six centuries of history, as well as insights into everyday life in the past. The Museum of the History of Christians and Jews in Laupheim explores three centuries of shared life between Christian and Jewish residents. These themes complement Wain’s local and church history with accounts of everyday life in the past and another perspective on the region’s history.
