Oggelshausen on the Federsee Moor
Accommodation in Oggelshausen
Oggelshausen lies on the southeastern edge of the flat Federsee Moor region. Key features include the sculpture field with its stone sculptures, paths connected with the history of the moors and the region, and links to long-distance cycling routes. Art, landscape and outdoor activities offer different focal points for planning your trip.
Moorland landscape and trails
From Oggelshausen, you can access the 9.5 km Archaeological Moorland Nature Trail directly. It leads into the Southern Federsee Marsh nature reserve. Eleven stations explore prehistoric settlements in the moor as well as natural and regional history. These themes provide a common thread along the trail: early history and landscape are as much a part of it as the area’s natural environment. This means you can appreciate the trail not only for its length, but also for what it teaches you.
The Federsee Circular Hiking Trail offers another perspective on the routes and passes directly through Oggelshausen. Starting in Bad Buchau, it takes you in turn through Oggelshausen, Tiefenbach, Seekirch, Alleshausen, Brackenhofen and Moosburg. The circular trail runs around the Federsee nature reserve and roughly follows the shoreline of the lake as it was before it was artificially lowered just over 200 years ago. Along this route, today’s villages and the former position of the lakeshore sit side by side.
Sculpture field and Laurentius Festival
The sculpture field near Oggelshausen is a striking cultural highlight: 15 distinctive stone sculptures were created by renowned sculptors from five countries and three continents. The artists’ international backgrounds give this place its distinctive character. The sculpture field is very well signposted within the village. Follow the signposted path to the field for about 2 km to reach a hiking car park at the edge of the woods; from there, you can walk to the sculptures. This sequence is useful for planning: first find your way through the village, then follow the path to the car park, and finally continue on foot to the stone sculptures.
The Laurentius Festival is another cultural event in Oggelshausen. It takes place every year on the first weekend in August in honour of Saint Laurentius and Saint Agatha. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, you can take that weekend into account when choosing your travel dates.
Cycling connections and getting there
Oggelshausen is connected to the important long-distance Danube Cycle Route and Lake Constance Cycle Route. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can include both routes in your wider plans. Oggelshausen also has a direct public transport connection to Bad Buchau and Biberach via the L 280 state road. Check the timetable before setting off so you can confirm the connection for your specific travel date.
If the stone sculptures and direct access to the moorland nature trail are your main priorities, Oggelshausen is a good place to focus your accommodation search. For a trip centred more on cycling, you can also consider its connections to the two cycle routes. This makes it easier to choose where to stay based on the experiences you want to include.
Culture in the wider Biberach destination
In the wider Biberach destination, the Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach offers a distinct focus on history and everyday life in the past. It presents six centuries of history and includes more than 30 historic buildings that offer insights into daily life in bygone times.
