Discover Leonberg: History, Gardens and Trails
Accommodation in Leonberg
Leonberg combines a historic old town with a distinctive terraced garden and trails with a range of different focuses. You can put culture and local history at the centre of your visit, make time for the outdoors or choose longer routes.
Old Town, Architectural History and Museum
The old town has retained its cohesive historic layout and largely original ground plan to this day. The Leonberg Old Town Trail takes you to 35 historic sites and can be explored independently. This lets you choose your own stops and focus on the buildings that interest you most.
Historic buildings include a Gothic parish church dating from the late 13th century. The half-timbered town hall was built between 1462 and 1482. Leonberg Castle was rebuilt under Duke Christoph between 1560 and 1565. Together, these buildings offer different points of reference in the old town, from a medieval religious building to a 16th-century castle.
The Leonberg City Museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.; visits can also be arranged by appointment. Admission is free. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.
Pomeranzengarten and Engelberg Tower
Below the castle lies the Pomeranzengarten, a terraced garden with four small corner towers, an ornamental fountain and decorative garden plots. Flowers, as well as aromatic, culinary and medicinal plants, grow in neatly arranged beds. The clearly structured terraces and variety of plants make the garden a distinct focus for a day in town. If you want to discover Leonberg through more than its architectural history, this is another way to explore the place.
The Engelberg Tower is another landmark: it stands on the 480.60-metre-high Engelberg, and 123 steps lead to the viewing platform. This offers a different experience from a walk around town or a route through the countryside: here, the climb is an integral part of the visit.
Trails for Different Interests
The Christian-Wagner Poetry Trail runs around Warmbronn through meadows and forest. Eleven poetry stops accompany the route, which takes about two hours to walk. The LEO 41 cycle route offers a different experience: at around 41 kilometres, it loops around Leonberg through a varied cultural landscape. The two routes therefore differ both in how you travel and in their stated distances.
The Leonberg Path of Remembrance focuses on history. Its six stops explore the history of the lives, work and deaths of prisoners at the former camp. Its subject is markedly different from the poems along the Christian-Wagner Poetry Trail or the historic sites in the old town. When planning your stay, you can decide how much time to devote to each of these different themes.
Seasonal Events and Planning the Right Trip
The Leonberg Horse Market takes place every year in February and is a festival with a 300-year tradition. In summer, the town park and its lakeside stage provide a setting for concerts. If you plan to travel to Leonberg for one of these events, check the specific dates for your travel period. This lets you plan around the event while still keeping the town’s other attractions in view.
When choosing accommodation, consider whether you want to focus on local history, the garden and museum, or a longer tour. Leonberg offers a range of themes for trips with different interests: independent exploration of the old town, plants and garden design, poetry along the way, a cycle ride or an exploration of the history of the former camp. Search for accommodation in Leonberg based on the experiences you want to make time for.
