At an elevation of 816 metres, Holzschlag lies amid red sandstone and granite, surrounded by dense woodland. Hiking routes, a bee information trail and a cycling route offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Hiking between the Bee Information Trail and a Shelter

The Via Apis bee information trail is an approximately two-kilometre panoramic circular route suitable for pushchairs. It starts at the Holzschlag hiking car park. Along the themed trail are 15 information boards, as well as a display beehive. There is a playground and parking at the starting point, and an information centre is also available. The circular route lets you explore the subject of bees, while its suitability for pushchairs is a practical consideration when planning a day out with a pushchair.

Another hiking option is Circular Route No. 2, Holzschlag–Glashütte. From Holzschlag village square, it follows the bee information trail and the Vorderbergweg, Kohlweg and Bruggenweg paths to Glaserbuck Hut, a basic shelter. This route focuses on reaching a named destination, while Via Apis is described as a panoramic circular route with information boards and a display beehive. The two routes therefore offer different highlights for your time on foot.

Cycling Route and Access to the Wutach Gorge

The Bähnle cycle path follows the historic railway line as far as Holzschlag. It then runs above Gündelwangen, past horse pastures, and offers a lovely view of the Wutach Gorge. This makes it possible to choose a cycling route with its own distinctive landscape as well as the hiking routes. There is also an access point to the Wutach Gorge from the Holzschlag village square motorhome parking area.

According to a route sheet updated on 13 June 2018, Circular Route No. 3, Holzschlag–Gündelwangen, can be reached from Neustadt or Bonndorf on bus route 7258. Check the current timetable before travelling.

History and Regional Highlights

The small hamlet of Glashütte was once part of Holzschlag. It is documented as early as 1296 and takes its name from a glassworks that operated there. Its historical mention and the origin of its name give the area a connection to the past beyond today’s trails and nature experiences.

Bonndorf in the Black Forest

In the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest, the Bonndorf Castle Jester Rooms display more than 400 true-to-life miniature jester figures made by Theo Hany himself. The castle vault also houses more than 300 original masks, or larvae, from across the region’s Fasnacht carnival tradition. These exhibits offer a distinct cultural theme alongside Holzschlag’s nature and trail experiences.

The 3,543-hectare Wutach Gorge FFH area is also part of the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest. It extends across 24 percent of the municipality of Bonndorf and includes the two nature reserves Wutach Gorge and Vogtsberg.

In Bonndorf in the Black Forest, Schwarzwaldimkerei & Brennerei Herb produces honey specialities, fruit brandies, honey schnapps and liqueurs using regional ingredients. The farm shop stocks honey, bee and spirits products. So, alongside landscapes, trails and Fasnacht culture, the wider destination also offers a taste of regional produce.
