Discover Oberried: Felsenweg, Pasture Culture and History
Accommodation in Oberried
With Schniederlihof, Felsenweg and Weidelehrpfad, Oberried showcases different sides of the area: from architectural and museum history to panoramic views and landscape conservation. When planning your trip, consider whether you are primarily interested in history, hiking, or the relationship between grazing livestock and protected habitats. This focus can also help guide you when looking for suitable accommodation.
History and access to Schniederlihof
Schniederlihof was built in 1593 and opened as a museum in 1972. It can only be reached on foot: From the church in Hofsgrund, a signposted, easy walking path leads 750 metres to the farm. There is a large car park in the village.
There is also a picnic area with seating and a small kiosk at Schniederlihof. During opening hours, the kiosk offers drinks, coffee, cake and a light snack; depending on the weather, it is also open on weekdays. Checking the current opening hours before your visit will help you plan.
The cattle drive is another part of Oberried’s tradition: it is the traditional highlight of Alemannische Woche. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific event dates in advance.
Hiking, landscape conservation and different levels of difficulty
The Felsenweg quality hiking trail is 12.2 kilometres long and leads from Oberried through an impressive rocky landscape at around 1,000 metres above sea level, descending into the unspoilt St. Wilhelmer Tal. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Dreisamtal and of Schauinsland, StĂĽbenwasen and Feldberg. The stated distance and viewpoints give you specific information to help plan a hike as part of your trip.
The Erlenbacher Weidelehrpfad focuses on a different topic. It explains how grazing livestock enriches and maintains the cultural landscape, thereby helping to preserve specially protected habitats. The focus here is on the connections between grazing, landscape conservation and habitat protection—a different perspective from the rocky landscape and panoramas of the Felsenweg.
There is a clear restriction for mountain bikers: the “Schädelwäg” trail is suitable only for technically skilled mountain bikers. Its steep sections cannot be bypassed. The herb garden is also idyllically situated near the former monastery in Oberried.
Oberried and the wider travel destination of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald
Transport options may also be relevant when planning a wider-ranging trip. Many towns in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district can be reached by train. The free KONUS guest card allows you to use local trains and buses throughout the Black Forest free of charge. For specific journeys, it is worth checking the connections.
Other attractions in the wider travel destination of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald offer a different focus from Oberried’s trails and culture. At Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee, summer temperatures prevail 365 days a year, with real palm trees and turquoise-blue water. The Galaxy water slide universe offers more than 25 attractions and water fun for all ages. In Feldberg, Fundorena includes a three-level trampoline park. Its X Mind Arena has six stations, and Fundorena also features its own snack bar, “Chicco’s Lounge.”
When planning a wider-ranging trip, you can also take regional attractions and train connections into account.
