Hartheim am Rhein combines nature experiences with tangible traces of local history. A fallow deer enclosure is located in the Rheinwald forest, while St. Peter and Paul Church and “Zum Salmen” offer historical and artistic details. Nearby, there are also trails and a boat trip on the Altrhein. Your trip can therefore combine nature, local history and other experiences—depending on whether you focus on Hartheim or also include the broader Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald destination.

Nature in the Rheinwald forest and on the Altrhein

The fallow deer enclosure is a distinctive landmark: from the centre of Hartheim, follow Rheinstraße towards the Rhine; the enclosure is opposite the forester’s lodge. It is located in the Rheinwald forest and covers about two hectares. The approximate area gives you a sense of the enclosure’s scale, while the directions place it within the town.

The Altrhein, close to Hartheim, offers a different focus: leisurely walks, hiking, cycling, jogging and walking. An exploratory boat trip on the Altrhein is considered a special experience. The extensive Rheinwald forest nearby is also criss-crossed by cycling and hiking trails. A stroll, hike or bike ride and the boat trip offer different ways to enjoy a day in nature.

Church, local history and a stage backdrop

The new St. Peter and Paul Church was consecrated in 1872. The year gives visitors interested in culture a specific historical reference point for Hartheim.

Another particularly striking feature is the stage painted by Andrea Berthel at “Zum Salmen”: at its centre is a Shakespearean feast, based on a work by Paolo Veronese. The building’s history also includes Dietrich Schwanitz’s purchase of the former village inn “Zum Salmen” in Hartheim am Rhein in 2001. The painting and the building’s former role as a village inn offer different ways to explore this part of local history.

More experiences across the broader destination

Throughout the broader Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald destination, many places in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district are accessible by train. The free KONUS guest card gives you free travel on local trains and buses throughout the Black Forest.

Another regional highlight is Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee, where summer temperatures prevail 365 days a year, alongside real palm trees and turquoise-blue water. The Galaxy water slide universe offers more than 25 attractions and water-based fun for all ages. In Feldberg, Fundorena includes a trampoline park on three levels; the Fundorena X Mind Arena consists of six stations. Fundorena also has its own snack bar, “Chicco’s Lounge”. The attractions have clearly different focuses: water and slides in Titisee, and trampolining and a station-based arena format in Feldberg.

This can help you decide whether to focus your search on a stay in Hartheim or include other places in the region as well.
