Discover hiking, winegrowing and history in Sexau
Accommodation in Sexau
In Sexau, marked hiking trails meet winegrowing culture and regional history. Sexau is considered a gateway to the Black Forest and the Rhine Plain. Almost 50 kilometres of marked hiking trails offer a variety of hiking options. The Räbhisliwäg has its own focus: it leads through Sexau’s winegrowing landscape and explores local viticulture. There is also the Panoramaweg and historical sites such as the Grube Caroline silver mine near Sexau. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether hiking, winegrowing or historical topics are your main priority.
Hiking trails with different planning details
The Räbhisliwäg starts in the town centre; allow around 80 minutes for it. The Panoramaweg starts at Allmendbuck and is about 10.6 kilometres long. The two trails therefore offer different points of reference for planning your day: an approximate duration for the Räbhisliwäg and a distance for the Panoramaweg. Before setting out, it is worth checking the latest signs and trail conditions.
Winegrowing as the focus of the Räbhisliwäg
The Räbhisliwäg is a themed trail through Sexau’s winegrowing landscape. Thirteen information boards explain winegrowing in Sexau. The main grape variety grown there is Pinot Noir; Sexau wines are available from the Buchholz/Sexau winegrowers’ cooperative. Wine enthusiasts on the route can therefore enjoy both views of the landscape and specific local insights into winegrowing and grape varieties.
Mining and Hochburg Castle
The Grube Caroline silver mine is near Sexau and is associated with extensive mining in the Freiamt-Sexau mining district between 1200 and 1530. The medieval ruins of Hochburg Castle, one of Baden’s largest castle complexes, lie between Emmendingen and Sexau. The first written reference to Hochburg dates back to 1161. Hochburg can be visited year-round until dusk; check the latest visitor information before your visit. The Association for the Preservation of Hochburg Castle operates a museum there and offers guided tours.
The Emmendingen district as a regional setting
The Emmendingen district has a network of 800 kilometres of hiking trails and routes. The district also has 900 kilometres of cycle routes, including 250 kilometres of signposted trails. The district’s winegrowing is part of the Kaiserstuhl and Breisgau winegrowing areas and covers around 2,300 hectares. At 1,242 metres, the Kandel is the highest mountain in the Emmendingen district. Activities on the Kandel include downhill ski runs, cross-country ski trails, a snowboard fun park, toboggan runs and snowshoeing. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore helpful to decide on your main focus first: Sexau’s winegrowing and hiking trails, or a broader interest in what the Emmendingen district has to offer.
