Weisweil combines nature along the Rhine with local discoveries: Rhine forest, Rhine floodplains, an orchard information trail and water sports offer a variety of highlights. There is also an extraordinary inn sign and an annual Pentecost custom. If you are looking for accommodation in Weisweil, a clear priority can help: should your trip focus primarily on nature trails, the water or local history?

Rhine forest, Rhine floodplains and orchard trail

Explore the Rhine forest on foot or by bicycle. The walk takes about an hour and is suitable for families with children. The Rhine floodplains are ideal for longer walks and cycling tours; you can also enjoy a picnic beside one of the many small, hidden lakes. So, alongside longer outings, time by the water offers another way to experience nature.

The 860-metre-long orchard information trail in Weisweil offers a closer look at fruit trees. It features around 108 mature trees and approximately 40 newly planted trees of various apple, pear, plum and cherry varieties. The new plantings are accompanied by information about their distinctive characteristics and uses, as well as their soil and climate requirements. The trail thus combines a manageable distance with insights into different fruit varieties and their individual qualities.

Water as a focus in its own right

The Rhine lateral canal and the construction of the French Rhine hydroelectric power stations created a weir. As a result, the Rhine is about 600 metres wide at Weisweil and has become a popular water sports area for locals and visitors. For visitors with a particular interest in the Rhine, this offers a different focus from the trails through the Rhine forest and floodplains.

The swimming lake on the Rhine is also part of the local water-based offering. Regular tests by the Emmendingen Health Office found that water samples fully met bathing water requirements. If you are travelling by boat, the Weisweil Motorboat and Yacht Club offers visitors several guest berths. Check their current availability directly with the club.

Sculpture trail and Weisweil traditions

The Weisweil sculpture trail is a special attraction at any time of year. It adds a cultural highlight to the range of activities, without requiring a particular time of year or occasion. A different side of local life is showcased by the annual Weisweil Pentecost hoppen: children dress up and go from door to door asking for treats, much like on Halloween.

A striking testament to local history can be found in the council chamber of Weisweil Town Hall, next to the local history museum: Germany’s most beautiful and largest inn sign. It hung at the Gasthaus zum Erbprinz in Weisweil until 1939. The sign depicts Karl Ludwig, Hereditary Prince of Baden (1755–1801), alongside various hunting scenes. Both its former location and its present home in the town hall are part of the story of this remarkable piece.

Cycling route and regional setting

The Rhine Valley Cycle Route runs from Breisach railway station via Burkheim, Sasbach and Wyhl through Weisweil, then continues to Rheinhausen and Rust. This makes Weisweil part of a named route linking several towns. When planning, you can consider the cycle route as a separate point of reference alongside local options in the Rhine forest and floodplains.

The district offers a wider setting for cycling and hiking in the larger Emmendingen travel destination: it has 900 kilometres of cycle routes, including 250 kilometres of signposted routes. There is also a well-developed network of 800 kilometres of hiking trails and routes. These regional figures refer to the district of Emmendingen and complement the specific trails and experiences in Weisweil.
