Königsbach-Stein lies between Kraichgau and the Northern Black Forest. Half-timbered architecture, a local history museum and twelve walking and hiking trails give the town several different facets: you can explore architectural history and regional everyday culture, or include some exercise in your travel plans. The right accommodation also depends on whether you want to focus on Königsbach-Stein itself or the wider Enzkreis district.

Half-timbered architecture and local history

The half-timbered town hall in Königsbach is a graceful half-timbered building that has remained intact for more than three centuries. Its preservation makes the building a tangible piece of local history and a special stop for anyone interested in traditional architecture.

At the Batsch-Brestowatz Local History Museum in the Amtsdienerhaus in Stein, you can explore different aspects of the history of the Danube Swabians. On display are traditional costumes, works by Batsch-Brestowatz painters, books and documents, an original escape wagon, and various everyday objects. The collection thus brings together art, documents and items from daily life, rather than focusing on just one type of exhibit.

The museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 5 p.m., as well as by telephone appointment. Call ahead to arrange your visit before setting out. This way, you can include time at the museum in your plans without assuming it will be available as a spontaneous activity.

Landscape, trails and places of remembrance

There are twelve walking and hiking trails in and around Königsbach-Stein, with numerous benches along the way. The options let you build some exercise into your stay and plan for breaks.

For a closer look at the landscape, head to Steiner Mittelberg: 39 hectares there were designated a nature reserve on June 20, 1989. When visiting, follow the applicable access rules. The old boundary stones around Königsbach-Stein also tell the story of the town. Some have been documented with photographs, descriptions of their engravings and surveyed locations. Individual stones may since have gone missing, so the documentation does not guarantee that every stone will still be found on site.

The Enzkreis as a broader travel option

For a broader perspective, it is worth looking at the Enzkreis: located in the Northern Black Forest region, in the heart of Baden-Württemberg between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, it surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Its landscapes differ markedly. In the northwest, fields, meadows and vineyards define the Kraichgau. In the Stromberg, wooded heights alternate with gentle valleys and sunny vineyard slopes; in the Heckengäu, juniper heaths, blackthorn and hedges of hawthorn define the scenery. In the southwest of the Enzkreis are dense fir forests, woodland meadows, broad plateaus and narrow valleys of the Northern Black Forest.

The wider Enzkreis destination also offers examples of cultural activities and things to do outdoors. Neuenbürg Castle houses a branch museum of the Baden State Museum. The tour begins in the north wing with an immersive theatrical presentation of Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale “The Cold Heart.” For those more interested in outdoor history, the Eppinger-Linien-Weg is an artistic and historical hiking trail with installations between Eppingen and Mühlacker. These are independent regional suggestions in addition to the attractions in Königsbach-Stein.

First decide which area you want to focus on, then look for accommodation that suits your chosen destination.
