Enzkreis is located in the Northern Black Forest region, in the heart of Baden-WĂĽrttemberg, between the metropolitan areas of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. It surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. Its special appeal lies in its changing landscapes: vineyards and open countryside meet wooded hills, valleys and trails with very different highlights. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first deciding whether you would prefer to focus on culture, hiking, cycling or spending time by the water.

From the Kraichgau to the forested hills

In the northwest of Enzkreis, fields, meadows and vineyards shape the area that forms part of the Kraichgau. In the Stromberg, wooded hills, gentle valleys and sunny vineyards alternate. The Heckengäu has a different character: juniper heaths and blackthorn, hawthorn and white hawthorn hedges run through its sparse landscape. In the southwest, the Northern Black Forest opens up, with dense fir forests, forest meadows, broad plateaus and narrow valleys. These contrasts give each of your potential days out its own character, without requiring you to commit to just one type of landscape.

Two nature parks are also located in Enzkreis: the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park and the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. In both, the aim is to balance recreational interests with the protection of nature and the landscape. The district’s varied landscapes show why it is worth exploring each area: vineyards and gentle valleys offer a different experience from the hedgerow landscape or the hills and narrow valleys in the southwest.

Castle museum and traces of history

Neuenbürg Castle houses a branch museum of the Baden State Museum. The tour begins in the north wing with an immersive theatrical adaptation of Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale “The Cold Heart.” The tale thus provides the opening to the museum tour and gives a visit to the castle an unusual narrative framework. Neuenbürg is also home to the “Frischglück” mine, one of the Northern Black Forest’s old iron ore mines.

Other cultural trails connect history and landscape in different ways. The Eppinger Lines Trail is an artistic and historical hiking trail with installations between Eppingen and MĂĽhlacker. A section of the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail, a European cultural route recognized by the Council of Europe, also passes through Enzkreis. If you prefer to experience culture on the move, these routes offer a different approach from the museum in the castle.

Hiking between vineyards and forests

The signposted panoramic circular trail in Freudenstein-Hohenklingen runs over the hills and through vineyards and forests around the town. Six other hiking routes of varying difficulty are between 10 and 22 kilometers long. They run around Knittlingen, Sternenfels, Maulbronn, Ölbronn-Dürrn, Ötisheim, Mühlacker, Kieselbronn, Niefern, Neulingen, Königsbach-Stein and Eisingen. This makes it possible to compare shorter and longer routes by their stated distances. Check the latest route details before choosing a particular hike.

Cycle routes and water as other options

The total lengths of the cycle routes also vary considerably. The Enz Valley Cycle Route is 105 kilometers long and passes through Mühlacker along the Enzklösterle–Pforzheim–Mühlacker–Vaihingen–Walheim route. The Stromberg-Murr Valley Cycle Route passes through Maulbronn along its 160-kilometer Karlsruhe–Maulbronn–Marbach–Gaildorf route. The Württemberg Wine Cycle Route is 354 kilometers long and passes through Mühlacker and Maulbronn, among other places. Another option is the 260-kilometer Black Forest Central/North Nature Park Cycle Route, which runs via Freudenstadt, the Kinzig Valley, Ortenau, Ettlingen, Straubenhardt and Neuenbürg before returning to Freudenstadt. Both the total distance and the places named can help with your planning; the route and signage may change, so check the current route.

Canoeing is now possible on the Enz, which flows through Enzkreis from east to west. At the Tiefer See natural swimming lake in Maulbronn, pedal boats and rowing boats are available seasonally for a trip on the lake. There are also changing rooms, showers and toilets. Boat trips are seasonal, so take this into account when planning your visit.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation search

When looking for accommodation in Enzkreis, it helps to have a specific focus: would you like your stay to center on a museum tour, a hiking trail, a longer cycling route or a seasonal boat trip on the lake? Choose where to stay based on which of the experiences mentioned interests you most. This lets you start planning with what you want to discover, then search more purposefully for accommodation for your trip.
