Frickenhausen combines well-marked scenic trails with local history that can be discovered through its church, half-timbered houses, and wine presses. The routes are designed to introduce you to nature and history, and vary considerably in length and theme. This lets you plan your trip around whether you want to focus on varied landscapes or historic places.

Scenic trails: different routes and themes

The 13.0-kilometer Scenic Trail 1 runs around Frickenhausen and Linsenhofen. It starts and ends at Frickenhausen station. At 5.5 kilometers, Scenic Trail 2 is considerably shorter and leads to HummelsmĂĽhle. Scenic Trail 8 covers 4.0 kilometers through vineyards and orchards; Scenic Trail 11 runs for 6.5 kilometers along the fruit-tree educational trail. If you would like to choose a longer route, Scenic Trail 4 offers an 8.5-kilometer route to the Florian volcanic vent.

Of the trails listed here, Scenic Trail 8 is the shortest and Scenic Trail 1 the longest. In between are three routes of 5.5, 6.5, and 8.5 kilometers. Along with the distance, the destinations and landscapes provide a guide: HummelsmĂĽhle and the Florian volcanic vent are named stopping points, while vineyards, orchards, and the fruit-tree educational trail define the themes of other routes. These differences make the routes a practical choice for planning your day, rather than just a list of trail names.

The Way of St. James and its trail marker

The Way of St. James also passes through Frickenhausen, running from Reudern via Jakobsbrunnen to GroĂźbettlingen. It is marked by a yellow scallop shell on a blue background. This marker gives the route a clear visual identifier, and its course can also be understood from the places named. The pilgrimage route thus complements the scenic trails with another way to discover Frickenhausen along a route.

Church, half-timbered houses, and local history

The Protestant parish church of Our Lady was first mentioned in 1358. It contains art treasures from the 15th century, including a console bust of the Apostle James bearing pilgrims’ insignia. Historic half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries stand along Mittlere Straße. The church and houses represent different periods: the church’s first mention takes us back to the Middle Ages, while the half-timbered houses tell the story of later centuries.

An annual event may also be of interest when planning your trip: a pottery and arts and crafts market takes place in central Frickenhausen in mid-May. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with it, check the current date before traveling.

Wine presses and orchards

The historic wine presses in Frickenhausen date back to 1702. The Linsenhofen wine press was expanded in 1823 for use as a fruit press. In autumn, harvested fruit can be brought to the press and made into cider or juice. As this service is seasonal and requires arrangements, check availability and make arrangements in advance. This connects the history of the wine-press buildings with a tradition of processing fruit that can be experienced firsthand in autumn.

The wider region: Esslingen district

Beyond Frickenhausen, six landscapes shape Esslingen district: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, Neckar Valley, the foothills of the Swabian Jura, and the Albtrauf escarpment. The district’s landscape is also shaped by its orchards, with 1.5 million fruit trees. This regional context complements the local scenic trails and wine presses with a glimpse of the district’s varied landscapes, without linking any individual area to a specific Frickenhausen route.
