The source of the Kinzig and Lake Kinzig are located in the natural area of the magical landscape in Loßburg. The area around the lake provides a habitat for many plant and animal species. Experiences range from short themed trails to a longer circular route with a viewpoint, offering different options for your visit.

Nature trails in the magical landscape

The Wiesenerlebnisrunde is a circular trail just under one kilometre long, with eight information boards about fields and meadows. The beaver trail offers a different focus: it runs between Lake Kinzig and the source of the Kinzig along narrow paths, passing five information boards about beavers. Introduced in summer 2026, the trail focuses on the animal; children can learn interesting facts about beavers and hide in a beaver lodge. So, the short Wiesenerlebnisrunde focuses on fields and meadows, while the trail combines nature facts with the beaver lodge.

Vogtei Tower and scenic trails

Vogtei Tower on Rodter Höhe is 35 metres high and open year-round. Climb 172 galvanised steel steps to reach the viewing platform, 31 metres above the ground. In good weather, the view extends beyond Loßburg as far as Zollernalb. If you would like to combine a visit to the tower with a hike, the five-kilometre Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm offers a route linking the tower and the magical landscape along narrow paths. Compared with the Wiesenerlebnisrunde, which is just under one kilometre long, it is the longer trail option.

For a cycle trip, the Kinzigtal cycle path runs from Loßburg along the Kinzig to Alpirsbach; it is possible to return by train. Check the timetable for your specific travel date if you plan to make this return journey. Loßburg thus offers both hiking and cycling experiences, each suited to a different kind of outing.

Culture in the wider Freudenstadt destination

The wider Freudenstadt destination also offers distinctive cultural attractions. Alpirsbach is home to the monastery and its imposing monastery church. It is one of the few monasteries in southwest Germany preserved according to the principles of the medieval Hirsau Reform. A classic guided tour of historic Alpirsbach visits historic buildings and includes a stroll through the spa gardens. The Museum of City History explains the city’s development through selected collectible items. The permanent exhibition “Monks and Scholars” in the monastery museum displays garments, letters, drawings, games and vessels from six centuries. Its architecture, guided tour and collections offer different ways to explore Alpirsbach’s history.

In Freudenstadt, the marketplace, with its 50 fountains and arcades, makes its own impression; it is Germany’s largest marketplace. For other leisure activities and things to discover, Panorama-Bad offers a sports and leisure pool with a slide tower, toddler area, sauna complex, wellness area and outdoor pool. Experimenta is an interactive museum for the whole family, where visitors are invited to get involved and try things out. If you prefer being outdoors, consider the audio-guided Tannenriesen listening tour from Freudenstadt: the route features the largest fir tree in the Black Forest, moss carpets and scenic views; rustic huts invite you to stop and relax along the way.
