Discover Wittendorf: History, trails and winter
Accommodation in Wittendorf
Wittendorf offers several reasons to visit: early traces of local history, a marked hiking trail, an e-bike route and winter sports whose operation depends on snow conditions. You can tailor your stay to whether you are mainly interested in culture, outdoor activities or winter pursuits.
Local history and insights into village life
Wittendorf’s history includes weapon graves from the 6th and 7th centuries and its first recorded mention around 1100. The graves therefore date to an earlier period than the written record of the village. The local history museum in the Kornspeicher displays pictures and objects from village life. The museum is housed in a historic building that once belonged to Alpirsbach Monastery.
If you like to combine history with a specific activity, you can plan the museum exhibits and the “Wittendorfer Kornäcker” hike as separate highlights.
Hiking and cycling around Wittendorf
The “Wittendorfer Kornäcker” hike starts at the car park by the Wittendorf sports ground and follows the yellow diamond trail marker towards Neuneck. After about 500 m, the route reaches a playground and barbecue area beneath a lime tree. The tree also marks the highest point on the circular route; a bench by the tree offers 360-degree views. For families with children, the play area is a practical stop to include in your route planning.
The NPe5 eBike Tour 5 “Rund ums Loßburger Ferienland” offers a different kind of activity: it climbs from the Ursental to Wittendorf and continues into the Heimbachtal. The two routes differ in both how you travel and where they go: the Kornäcker route focuses on a marked hike and its viewpoint, while the e-bike route goes beyond Wittendorf towards the Heimbachtal.
Fishing by visitors at Hubertussee is prohibited until further notice because of the low water level. Before your visit, check whether the restriction is still in effect. This is especially important if you are considering making fishing a fixed part of your travel plans.
Winter sports with season-dependent operation
The Käppele–Wittendorf winter sports area lies at an altitude of 562 to 627 m. The area includes the Wittendorf ski lift, a 400 m-long platter lift with a capacity of 600 people per hour. These details give you a clear idea of the lift; however, its seasonal operation depends on snow conditions. If winter sports are a deciding factor for your trip, check conditions before setting off.
More discoveries in the wider Loßburg destination
If you include Loßburg in your plans as a wider destination, you will find more natural attractions and routes there. The Zauberland nature area in Loßburg is home to the source of the Kinzig and the Kinzigsee lake. The natural area around the lake provides a habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
On the Rodter Höhe, the Vogteiturm is 35 m tall and open year-round. Climb 172 steps made of galvanized steel to reach a platform 31 m above the ground. In good weather, the view extends beyond Loßburg as far as the Zollernalb. The five-kilometre Augenblickrunde Vogteiturm connects the tower and the Zauberland via narrow paths.
In the Zauberland, the Wiesenerlebnisrunde is a circular trail just under one kilometre long, passing fields and meadows and eight themed information boards. Introduced in summer 2026, the new Bibererlebnispfad runs between the Kinzigsee and the source of the Kinzig along narrow paths and past five information boards about beavers. Children can learn about beavers there and hide in a beaver lodge.
The Kinzigtal cycle path also offers a longer tour option in the wider Loßburg destination: it runs from Loßburg along the Kinzig to Alpirsbach, and you can return by train. Check current train services separately if you plan to take the train back.
