Castle history, garden landscapes and striking hiking views showcase different sides of Donzdorf. At the centre of the town stands a castle built in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. Directly to the south lies the listed Castle Garden, covering around four hectares. Together, the castle and garden form a cultural focal point; the Messelberg Tour offers different landscape impressions.

Castle and garden at the centre of town

Over the centuries, the Castle Garden has evolved from a Baroque garden into an English landscape garden. The changing garden design is therefore also part of this place’s history. In the castle park, ten QR-code stations explore the habitat of urban green spaces and its diverse inhabitants. They add a focus on nature alongside the Renaissance architecture, giving a visit to the park a theme of its own.

The castle has housed a restaurant since 1995. Private group tours of Donzdorf Castle can be arranged on request at any time. Visitors exploring the castle park will find a circular route that is largely accessible year-round and easy to navigate with a wheelchair, rollator or pushchair. In winter, some paths or stations may have limited access due to weather conditions.

Hiking trails and views at the Messelberg

For different thematic focuses, there are an astronomy trail and the Messelberg Tour. The trail starts in the Castle Garden and is around seven kilometres long. The Messelberg Tour is a 7.7-kilometre circular route certified by the German Hiking Association in the “Dream Tour” category; it starts at the Messelberg hiking car park. The route lengths and themes provide practical guidance for planning, without suggesting that both trails offer the same experience.

The Messelberg Tour follows narrow paths along the Alb escarpment almost throughout. Natural deciduous forests, colourful flower meadows and panoramic views shape the landscape along the way. Its main viewpoint is the White Jurassic rock outcrop of the Messelstein, visible from afar and standing at an altitude of 748 metres. Views from the Messelstein and Rötelstein are also among the highlights of the “Messelbergtour” Löwenpfad trail. With a little luck, you may find ammonite fossils along the way.

The tour brings together several different impressions: narrow paths, woodland and meadows, expansive views and a striking rock outcrop. Those interested in geology can also keep an eye out for ammonite fossils; finding one is explicitly a matter of luck. The astronomy trail, by contrast, has a different thematic focus and starts right in the Castle Garden.

Fasnet, music and events around the castle

Donzdorf Fasnet is a highlight of the town’s annual programme. The grand parade on Shrove Sunday is a particular feature of the carnival season, when Donzdorf is also known as “Little Paris”. For those wishing to include cultural events in their travel plans, PREMIO Donzdorf is another notable occasion: this high-calibre competition to find the best pianist takes place in early September.

“Schloss.Garten.Genuss – The Market for Special Things” also turns the spotlight on the area around the castle. The market for garden lovers, food enthusiasts and Sunday strollers takes place every two years on the third Sunday in June. The town festival is held around the castle grounds; the open-air cinema in the eastern castle courtyard offers an outdoor experience against the backdrop of Donzdorf Castle. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival or competition, check its current dates in advance.

Plan your stay around your interests

If the castle park is part of your plans, note that the circular route is largely accessible year-round, although some paths or stations may have limited access in winter due to weather conditions. Group tours of the castle are available on request.
