Eybtal Valley, Hiking Trails and Views
The “Eybtal mit Teilen des Längen- und Rohrachtales” nature reserve covers more than 1,300 hectares. It is the largest nature reserve in the Stuttgart administrative district, and a large part of it lies within Geislingen’s municipal boundaries. The Eybtal Valley is accessible by train. From Geislingen station, waymarked trails lead to Helfenstein Castle ruins and the Ödenturm tower in just a few minutes. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
The Ödenturm tower stands on a rocky spur high above Geislingen an der Steige. It has stood for centuries and offers views of the Alb plateau and far across the Filstal Valley. From Geislingen’s pedestrian zone, you can reach it on foot in about 45 minutes via the Albtraufgänger Trail and a waymarked zigzag path. You can factor the approximate walking time into your day’s plans; check the trail operator’s notices for any diversions before setting out.
The more than 100-kilometre-long “Albtraufgänger” long-distance hiking trail passes through Geislingen an der Steige. It has been awarded the Quality Trail and “Leading Quality Trail” certifications. This means two different hiking perspectives meet in the town: a clearly defined walking route up to the Ödenturm tower and a long-distance hiking trail whose total length exceeds 100 kilometres. If you include the route in your travel plans, check current notices for possible diversions.
Town Church, Alter Bau and Schubart
The present-day Protestant town church was built between 1424 and 1428 and was once dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its current name and former dedication point to different chapters in its history. The Alter Bau building also brings together different periods: it houses the Geislingen Town Museum and municipal gallery, and was built around 1445 as a granary. The building is considered an important example of 15th- and 16th-century Alemannic or Gothic timber construction in southwestern Germany.
A themed trail with twelve stops uses engaging short texts to present aspects of the life and work of Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart (1739–1791). Schubart lived in Geislingen an der Steige for six years; the trail makes his connection to the town a subject in its own right. Alongside buildings, biographical details and the story of an individual are also at the heart of the exploration.
A guided hike from the old town to a castle ruin brings historical events from the Middle Ages to life. For booking details, contact the town directly. Alongside exploring historical topics independently, the hike offers a guided perspective on the Middle Ages.
