Wieden lies in a side valley between the Black Forest peaks of Feldberg and Belchen. Protected landscapes, a varied network of trails and seasonal winter activities give the village different faces. There is also the Church of All Saints in the village centre and the Finstergrund Visitor Mine between Wieden and Utzenfeld. You can tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to go hiking, enjoy the outdoors in winter or explore the history of mining.

Landscapes and trails around Wieden

Wieden lies in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve. The Wiedener Weidberge nature reserve is part of the core area of the Feldberg-Belchen-Upper Wiesental nature conservation project. The Weidberge are considered a cultural landscape with a high diversity of species. A circular trail in the protected area takes about an hour; whether it is accessible may depend on local conditions. This makes it a manageable loop if you would like to set aside part of the day for a walk.

For longer hiking days, Wieden has an extensive network of trails at the foot of Belchen. These include the Kneipp Hiking Circuit and the themed trails “Mining in the Wieden Valley” and “The Church Path from Wieden to Schönau”. The Belchensteig is a circular route that starts at Wiedener Eck. Wieden is also right on the Westweg: the 11th stage of the western variant leads from Wiedener Eck over Belchen towards Kandern. Mountain biking routes combine wide forest tracks with narrow trails.

Winter trails, cross-country skiing and sledging

In winter, Wieden offers seven groomed winter hiking trails. Grooming depends on seasonal conditions. From Wiedener Eck, cross-country skiers can continue towards the Hohtann or Notschrei cross-country ski centres. In winter, the Wieden Tourist Information Office lends out snowshoes and sledges; check the winter opening hours in advance if you plan to hire equipment. Wieden also has a short toboggan run for children. Its use depends on snow conditions.

The winter activities mainly differ in how you would like to spend the day: on foot along winter trails, on cross-country skis or on a sledge. All of these activities depend on seasonal conditions. If you are planning your trip specifically around a winter activity, check the grooming status and relevant opening hours in advance.

The church and the history of mining

The Church of All Saints stands in the village centre, where services are held regularly. Another experience is the Finstergrund Visitor Mine between Wieden and Utzenfeld. Visitors travel by mine train, the “Zügli”, to the interesting parts of the mine. The route runs for around 900 metres to the ore and mineral tunnel. The mine offers underground guided tours; the visitor programme is seasonal. Be sure to check tour times before you arrive.

The history of mining can also be put into historical context: mining in the Upper Wiesental dates back to the 13th century. Silver and lead were sought in Finstergrund; from 1920 to 1974, fluorspar was subsequently mined there. The guided tour and mine train offer a different way to spend the day than hiking the trails around Wieden, with a focus on this history.
