Wittighausen can be explored on foot and by bike; all four districts have extensive forest areas. The Main-Tauber Cycle Route runs through a network that connects the Liebliches Taubertal and Maintal regions.

Circular Hikes with Different Profiles

Three circular hiking routes were marked in spring 2014; in the districts concerned, you can start in either direction. The Kapellen Circular Hiking Route NORTH is about 11 km long and takes around three hours. It is considered easy, has few uphill sections and runs mostly on asphalt. The Bildstock Circular Hiking Route allows for a shorter outing: it is about 7.6 km long, takes approximately two hours and is considered easy to moderate, with some uphill sections.

The two routes therefore differ both in their estimated walking time and in their stated profiles: the northern loop has few uphill sections, while the Bildstock loop has some. Hiking signs and flyers are available at six locations in Wittighausen’s districts. If you plan to rely on them for your tour, check that they are available before setting out. You should also check route details and trail conditions locally before a hike.

Cycling between the Wittig Valley and the Tauber Valley

Wittighausen lies halfway along the Main-Tauber Cycle Route, which connects the cycling networks of the Liebliches Taubertal and Maintal regions. The section through the Wittig Valley is about 18 km long and mostly follows the Wittig and GrĂĽnbach streams. The Wittig Valley Cycle Route is fully paved and relatively flat; from Kirchheim, you can continue towards WĂĽrzburg. A paved path also connects Wittighausen with Lauda in the Tauber Valley and WĂĽrzburg in the Main Valley.

If you are considering a longer hiking route beyond the town, nearby BĂĽtthard, about 4 km away, provides access to the over-800-km-long Franconian Way of St. Mary. Check the local signage before using it. Surfaces and connections on cycling routes can change, so checking current conditions is also part of planning your tour.

Forest Trails and Attractions in Wittighausen

Extensive forest areas in all four districts of Wittighausen can be reached via well-maintained farm tracks. These paths are ideal for walking and offer another way to explore the surrounding area on foot alongside the marked circular routes. Churches and chapels are also among Wittighausen’s attractions. The Hofkapelle chapel and St. Martin’s Church in Poppenhausen each house a replica, created by Heinz Schiestl, of an earlier Pietà by Tilman Riemenschneider.

When choosing accommodation, it may help to consider which activities you have planned: the circular routes and forest areas are a good guide for a stay focused on hiking, while the location on the Main-Tauber Cycle Route is of interest for cycling tours. Compare accommodation based on which of these priorities matters to you.

Culture and Wine in the Main-Tauber District

In the wider destination of the Main-Tauber district, the former Bronnbach Cistercian Monastery offers its own cultural and culinary highlights. The Bronnbach Kultouren programme includes concerts, readings, exhibitions, wine and culinary events, as well as talks. You can book wine tastings at the Taubertal Vinothek. More than 20 winegrowers and wineries showcase selected wines from Baden, WĂĽrttemberg and Franconia there. These offerings complement hiking and cycling tours in Wittighausen with further cultural and culinary experiences across the district.
