Leutkirch in the Allgäu: ponds, forests and glassmaking history
Accommodation in Leutkirch in the Allgäu
Leutkirch in the Allgäu lies in a hilly foothills landscape between forests and ponds. At 886 metres, the Kapf is Leutkirch’s highest point. Water, woodland and gentle hills add variety to your days out: you can combine circular walks with a visit to the bathing lake or explore the history of glassmaking.
Circular trails between ponds, forest and viewpoints
Circular Trail 1 passes the Repsweiher pond and then enters the Unterer Stadtwald forest. Another described section follows the railway line towards Leutkirch and crosses the Eschach. Hikers can take a break at Siebenbrünnen and refresh themselves with cool spring water; water availability may vary.
Circular Trail 2 takes a different route: it leads from the old town towards the Waldkapelle and reaches Weiherweg on the outskirts of Leutkirch. On the return, it passes the Repsweiher pond. If you would also like to see an Alpine panorama, you can take a detour to Balterazhofer Höhe. The two trails can thus be distinguished by their described landmarks: forest and the Eschach on Circular Trail 1; the old town, Waldkapelle and views from Balterazhofer Höhe on Circular Trail 2.
The history of glassmaking in Schmidsfelden
The Glasius Trail runs for just over four kilometres along the Eschach through the Adelegg. Its 16 interactive learning and play stations invite children and adults to discover the history of glassmaking in the Adelegg. The trail starts in Schmidsfelden and combines exercise with a specific theme of the area.
In the former glassmaking village of Schmidsfelden, glassmaker Stefan Michaelis gives glassmaking demonstrations. Check the current demonstration schedule before your visit. The Schmidsfelden Glass Museum also explores the area’s glassmaking history: it tells the story of the so-called “glass barons” as well as the ordinary workers. You can therefore experience the Glasius Trail, demonstrations and a museum visit as different ways of discovering the same craft.
Bathing lake and adventure trail
The Stadtweiher in Leutkirch is an 18-hectare bathing lake. Swimming conditions may vary; check the current situation before swimming. A family-friendly adventure trail has three stations for playing, picnicking and enjoying the views. At the “View of the Gallus Chapel” station, there is a viewing frame facing the chapel, a bicycle parking area, a slackline, a lounging bench and a relaxation lounger. The facilities at individual stations may change.
Concerts and planning your stay
A concert by a small ensemble takes place weekly in Leutkirch’s market square. Check the specific date for your travel dates if you would like to plan around the concert. Along with the hiking trails, Schmidsfelden and the Stadtweiher, it offers another possible focus for your days.
If you are also planning to spend time by the water, include the Stadtweiher in your plans. Check the exact location of your accommodation against your personal itinerary.
You can also discover Missen as another destination.
