Metzingen: Seven Presses, Wine and Outletcity
Accommodation in Metzingen
Metzingen offers several reasons to explore the city: protected historic wine presses, a wine museum and insights into its development into an outlet city. Wine tastings, a wine experience trail and Outletcity add further highlights to the programme. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most: local history and architecture, wine or shopping.
Seven Wine Presses and Metzingen’s History
The Seven Wine Presses are a group of fully preserved historic buildings in downtown Metzingen, protected as historic monuments. Kelternplatz is a notable historic site and is now the city centre. The Metzingen Wine Museum is part of a unique ensemble of seven historic wine presses. Kelternplatz is also home to the city library, a wine shop and various places to eat and drink.
“The Museum” offers a different perspective on the city. It is housed in a historic building that once accommodated Hugo Boss. The interactive exhibition is free of charge and tells the story of Metzingen’s development into an outlet destination. Local culture and the emotions of its residents are also among the topics explored. While the wine museum is closely linked to the historic wine presses, “The Museum” focuses on the city’s history and what shapes it today.
Experience Wine: Museum, Wine Shop and Guided Tours
The Wine Museum has a digital guide that, since 2024, has offered information in German, English and French to read or listen to. A public guided tour takes place during opening hours on the first Sunday of each month; no advance booking is required. The Wine Museum also offers wine tastings, wine experience tours and events. These different options offer a range of ways to explore winegrowing and the city.
At the wine shop on Kelternplatz, you can taste and buy products from the Metzingen vineyards. The Wengerterhäusle can be booked for wine tastings for private or business occasions with up to 35 people; a light meal is also available on request. If you are planning a visit for this purpose, confirm the booking arrangements before travelling. This distinguishes a self-guided visit to the wine shop from a booked event at the Wengerterhäusle.
Plan Your Route and Journey
If you would like to plan a route in addition to visiting the city centre, Metzingen has a wine experience trail. It is a circular route with two sections, each 2.5 kilometres long, and four starting points. The two sections of equal length and the four starting points make it easier to fit the walk into your day. You can make the route a separate part of your itinerary or focus your stay on museums and wine experiences.
The train journey from Stuttgart to Metzingen takes about 40 minutes; from Metzingen (Württ) station, Outletcity is just a few minutes’ walk away. Journey times may vary depending on the connection. A shopping shuttle also runs several times a week from Stuttgart to Outletcity Metzingen and back. Check the connection as well as the current shuttle days and booking conditions before you travel.
This selection helps you plan your trip around your interests without treating the different experiences as interchangeable.
