Experiences in the district of Reutlingen range from a minster in an old pilgrimage town to a historic castle, as well as hiking trails and themes relating to the Swabian Alb. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering which places and interests should shape your stay. This will also give direction to your search for suitable accommodation.

Zwiefalten: Minster and music

At the heart of the old monastery and pilgrimage town of Zwiefalten is the Minster of Our Lady. It is one of the most significant examples of German Baroque architecture. Its architecture and local history give a visit a distinct cultural focus. Minster concerts are also held there every year. Dates vary, so if a concert is important to your plans, check the relevant event date.

Lichtenstein Castle and the trail to Nebel Cave

Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. In tourist descriptions, it is known as a romantic historic castle and as the “Fairytale Castle of Württemberg.” The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle along impressive lookout cliffs directly to Nebel Cave. This circular route therefore links the castle and the cave with striking views of the cliffs.

Public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. If you plan to travel this way, check the current connections. The stops provide a specific starting point for planning, but you should still check the route you want to take to the castle.

Münsingen: Biosphere, museum and guided tours

At the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre, interactive displays and audio and video contributions share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. Group activities also include educational programs such as felting, planting, harvesting and cooking together. Specific program details may change. The Old Castle is also home to the Town Museum in the Castle, which presents the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb and complements the Biosphere Centre’s themes with a historical perspective on the region.

Another way to discover Münsingen is to take a tour of the former military training area. TrÜP Guides lead visitors on either private tours or group tours with other visitors on selected dates throughout the year. Check available dates and booking arrangements before making plans.

Hiking in the district

Fifteen trails from the hochgehberge hiking program run through the district of Reutlingen. Alongside the specific destinations in Zwiefalten, Lichtenstein and Münsingen, this provides a regional selection of hikes to consider when planning your trip. The trail network may change over time, so check the latest route details when making your selection. This will help you decide whether hiking, a cultural visit or a combination of different interests should shape your days.

Baden-Württemberg as a broader setting

Looking at Baden-Württemberg provides a broader perspective than the district of Reutlingen alone. Around 40 percent of the state is forested; its largest continuous forest areas include the Black Forest, the Swabian-Franconian Forest and the Odenwald. Feldberg, at 1,493 metres, is the highest elevation in the state and lies in the southern Black Forest. The “Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Jura” World Heritage site is also part of this wider cultural context: it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. Finds from caves in the Swabian Alb include the Venus of Hohle Fels, the Lion Man from Hohlenstein-Stadel and the oldest flutes known to date.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

Use the themes above as a starting point when choosing accommodation: the minster and concert dates in Zwiefalten, the castle and hiking route near Lichtenstein, or the biosphere centre, museum and guided tours in Münsingen. Decide which destinations are especially important to your plans and tailor your search accordingly. That way, you can start not with a general question about accommodation, but with the kind of stay you would like to have in the district of Reutlingen.
