Bammental can be discovered from several angles: trails, water-based activities and an unusual feature outside the local history museum each give the town its own character.

Hiking, cycling and water in Bammental

The E1 European long-distance hiking trail comes from the direction of Heidelberg and runs south through Bammental’s municipal area. Two cycling routes are signposted: the Elsenztal Tour runs from Neckargemünd via Wiesenbach and Bammental to Eppingen. Another signposted route runs through the Elsenztal from Neckargemünd via Bammental to Sinsheim. Both pass through Bammental but have different destinations. The signposted routes do not include any major climbs. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Bammental outdoor swimming pool has a water playground with water play equipment and a children’s paddling pool with a slide. The pool complex also includes an adjoining Kneipp pool and an outdoor fitness area with exercise equipment. The pool therefore offers a range of water-based and physical activities.

A wallpaper-making machine stands outside Bammental’s local history museum. This distinctive and unusual feature adds a cultural note of its own alongside hiking, cycling and swimming.

More attractions in the wider Rhein-Neckar district

Other towns in the wider Rhein-Neckar district have their own attractions too. In Schwetzingen, the Electoral Palace has a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. Asparagus has also been grown there for around 350 years. The palace and asparagus cultivation thus represent two different sides of Schwetzingen: architecture and a long local farming tradition.

Much of Ladenburg’s historic town centre still reflects the Middle Ages, and in places even Roman times. In Wiesloch, sections of the former town wall and defensive towers have been preserved. Visitors interested in different historical periods will find distinct historic features in each of these towns.

Nature and hiking also take different forms across the Rhein-Neckar district. Eberbach has 150 kilometres of marked hiking trails. The Bergstraße and the eastern part of the Rhein-Neckar district lie within the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park. The annual “Ab in den Wald” programme offers free guided walks and excursions in the woods throughout the district.

At Waidsee lake in Weinheim, there are areas for paddlers, sailors and windsurfers. At the bathing lake in St. Leon, water skiing and wakeboarding are offered on a cable system. These examples highlight different water-based activities: areas for a range of water sports at Waidsee and cable-system activities at St. Leon bathing lake.

Other excursion and cultural attractions in the Rhein-Neckar district include the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, a draw for motorsport fans, and the Technik Museum Sinsheim, which displays the Concorde. Guided tours are offered at Windeck Castle ruins in Weinheim. The options range from motorsport and technology to tours of castle ruins.

The Rhein-Neckar district is part of the “Im Süden ganz oben” network, together with five other tourism destinations. The network aims to raise the profile of northern Baden-Württemberg as a travel destination.
