Castle culture, historic townscapes, signposted trails and water sports give the Rhein-Neckar District several distinct travel highlights. The Electoral Palatinate’s Schwetzingen Palace features a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. In Ladenburg’s historic town centre, much of the townscape is still shaped by the Middle Ages and, in part, by the Roman period. These examples highlight different things: a palace with a theatre and park, and a townscape shaped by the medieval and, in part, Roman periods. If you are looking for accommodation, deciding first between cultural history, nature and active pursuits can help guide your choice of location.

Castles, City History and Technology

Wiesloch adds remnants of the former town wall and preserved defensive towers to these historic impressions. Guided tours are offered at the ruins of Windeck Castle in Weinheim. The Technik Museum Sinsheim displays the Concorde. The preserved sections of the town fortifications and the castle tours on offer highlight different things: the surviving structures in one case, and a guided tour as an experience in the other. The museum adds a technology theme to the choice of destinations.

Forests, Hiking Trails and Water

The nature experiences also take different forms. The Bergstraße and the eastern part of the Rhein-Neckar District lie within the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park. Throughout the district, the annual “Ab in den Wald” programme offers free guided forest walks and excursions. Eberbach has 150 kilometres of signposted hiking trails. For planning purposes, the examples differ mainly in format: the annual programme focuses on guided forest activities, while Eberbach offers a signposted network of trails with a specified length. This lets you choose nature excursions based on whether you prefer guided activities or hiking trails as your way to find your bearings.

Water Sports, Asparagus and Motorsport

At Waidsee lake in Weinheim, there are areas for paddlers, sailors and windsurfers; at the bathing lake in St. Leon, water skiing or wakeboarding is available on a cable system. The water sports options therefore differ in the type of activity. Asparagus has been grown in Schwetzingen for around 350 years. If you are also interested in agricultural history, this crop offers another local perspective. The Hockenheimring in Hockenheim is a draw for motorsport enthusiasts.

Baden-Württemberg in a Broader Context

Together with five other tourism destinations, the Rhein-Neckar District is part of the “Im Süden ganz oben” network, which aims to raise the profile of North Baden-Württemberg as a travel destination. Across the wider destination of Baden-Württemberg, large continuous forest areas such as the Black Forest, the Swabian Forest and the Odenwald shape the region; around 40 percent of the state is forested. Baden-Württemberg’s seven nature parks cover around one third of the state. The official tourism concept for Baden-Württemberg groups the visitor offer into four key themes: nature, culture, enjoyment and health. Baden-Württemberg as a whole also has around 1,300 museums, about 660 of which are in rural areas.
