Hilsbach
Accommodation in Hilsbach
Hilsbach has a historic townscape that extends across the Upper Town and Lower Town. The Eichelberg Experience Trail also starts here. When planning your trip, you can choose between two different focuses: the landscape and local history.
Wine-growing history and views from Eichelberg
The Experience Trail is about five kilometres long and has 20 stops with information about Eichelberg and its surroundings. It starts in Hilsbach at the Sportzentrum/Waldsee car park on Breite Straße. The route passes through a vineyard area where wine has been grown since the Middle Ages. It follows surfaced woodland and field paths with no significant climbs.
A viewing platform offers a view of the surrounding Kraichgau countryside. Steinsberg Castle rises to the east; in good weather, the view stretches over the vineyards to Heilbronn and the Palatinate Forest on the horizon.
If you like to plan your stay around a specific excursion theme, the Experience Trail makes a clear focal point. Both the vineyards and the view from the platform are part of what defines it. The distant views towards Heilbronn and the Palatinate Forest are explicitly dependent on good weather.
Upper Town, Lower Town and St Michael’s Church
Hilsbach’s densely built historic townscape extends across the Upper Town and Lower Town. The relocation of the settlement centre to the hill by the Counts of Oettingen was part of how this town layout came about. A new church was built there between 1250 and 1300, later dedicated to St Michael. St Michael’s Church was shared by the Protestant and Catholic congregations until the new Catholic church in Hilsbach was built in 1950/51.
This local history complements the Eichelberg landscape theme with a different perspective on Hilsbach: the development of the settlement centre and the shared use of St Michael’s Church take centre stage. If you are interested in historic townscapes, the Upper Town, Lower Town and church history offer concrete points of interest.
More experiences in the wider Sinsheim destination
The wider Sinsheim destination also has its own cultural attractions and places to visit. The Technik Museum Sinsheim displays a Tupolev, a Concorde and more than 3,000 other exhibits. The KLIMA ARENA has a glacier cinema. The town museum in Sinsheim invites visitors to explore the history of the town and region; at the Lichdi Laden, you can experience what shopping was like in the past.
Steinsberg Castle offers further insights in the Sinsheim area: it stands on a basalt cone between Sinsheim and Weiler, and the keep offers views over the surrounding countryside. You can explore the castle on a public or individually booked guided tour; check the dates before your trip. Stift Sunnisheim offers an approximately one-hour guided tour covering the eventful history of the former monastery complex and its former collegiate and monastery church. Here, too, it is advisable to check the dates before travelling.
Plan your stay in Hilsbach
When looking for accommodation in Hilsbach, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like the Experience Trail, with its wine-growing history and views, to take centre stage, or are you particularly interested in the historic townscape and its church history? This lets you choose a destination that suits your interests without combining landscape and local history into a single excursion theme.
