Schriesheim brings together winegrowing, paths through the vineyards and culture in the old town. The Théo Kerg Museum, the historic Anna-Elisabeth visitor mine and various hikes offer different reasons to discover the town. When planning your trip, you can take in art and local history as well as vineyard landscapes and trails.

Vineyards, views and trails

Below and alongside Strahlenburg Castle are vineyard slopes where excellent wines can ripen in the favourable climate. The guided wine walks pass through Schriesheim’s Kuhberg, Madonnenberg and Schlossberg wine-growing areas and are about 8 km long. Another wine walk leads to a viewing platform below Strahlenburg Castle, offering an unobstructed view across the Rhine Plain. Strahlenburg Castle itself also offers a particularly impressive view.

The local S4 circular hiking trail, “Steinbruchweg,” is 7.4 km long. It follows the Steinbruchweg back to Strahlenburg Castle and then descends from there through Heidelberger Straße into town, ending at the festival grounds. At 7.4 km, the S4 is somewhat shorter than the guided wine walks, which are about 8 km long. You can choose between a named circular trail via Strahlenburg Castle and Heidelberger Straße and guided tours through several wine-growing areas.

Wine traditions in the events calendar

The Red Wine Walk takes place every year on the first Sunday in February. It starts at the historic town hall in the heart of Schriesheim’s old town and follows a 5 km route. A total of eight stations, mostly in the lower vineyards, serve red wines, red Secco and mulled wine, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, children’s punch and coffee. The specific drinks on offer may vary; check the event date as part of your planning.

Held every year, the Mathaisemarkt celebrates Schriesheim’s winegrowing tradition and is considered the region’s largest spring and wine festival. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these events, check the dates in advance.

Art and history in Schriesheim

The Théo Kerg Museum presents the works of Luxembourgish artist Théo Kerg (1909–1993) in a permanent exhibition spread over three floors. The restored half-timbered building is located in the heart of Schriesheim’s old town. Kerg worked as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and glass artist, and the exhibition therefore explores a range of artistic disciplines. A free audio guide runs in any internet browser and can be accessed at more than 20 stations marked with QR codes. Special exhibitions featuring renowned artists from Germany and abroad are held twice a year; exhibition dates vary.

You can explore the town’s history outside the museum, too: numerous information panels along the Old Town Circular Trail offer insights into Schriesheim’s history. The “Kuhberg” themed trail is a circular route about 3 km long, with ten panels on the town’s history and Strahlenburg Castle. The two routes have different focuses: the history of Schriesheim along the Old Town Circular Trail, and the town’s history and Strahlenburg Castle on the themed trail.

The Anna-Elisabeth Mine is a 500-year-old silver and vitriol mine in Schriesheim. A guided tour lasting about an hour takes you through the underground world of the mine. It is directly accessible by public transport via the “Edelstein” bus stop. If you plan to join a tour, check the current dates in advance.

When looking for accommodation in Schriesheim, it helps to consider whether art and local history or vineyard landscapes and hikes will play a greater role in your trip.

Other places in the Rhein-Neckar district

Other towns in the Rhein-Neckar district also have their own cultural highlights: The Electoral Palace in Schwetzingen has a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. Ladenburg’s historic town centre still reflects the Middle Ages and, in part, the Roman era.
