Blumberg can be explored from different perspectives: railway history, hiking trails and nature experiences. The Sauschwänzlebahn, a walk with regional tastings and the view from the Nature Cinema each offer something different. These experiences can also help guide you when choosing accommodation for your stay.

Sauschwänzlebahn: operating days and railway history

The name Sauschwänzlebahn refers to the spiral course of the “Große Stockhalde” spiral tunnel, which resembles a curly little pig’s tail. Important for planning your visit: During the main season, the railway runs on weekends from the end of April to the end of October; from June to September, there are additional services on Thursdays and Fridays. Check the operator’s current timetable before travelling.

At Blumberg-Zollhaus station, a railway museum adds to the Sauschwänzlebahn experience. It has been housed in the former goods shed since 1992. The Reiter signal box is also worth a look: it is open on railway operating days, and admission is included in the ticket price. Check the operator’s current service information and weather advisories in advance.

Hiking with a range of themes

The approximately 4.1-kilometre Schnapshäusle hike is a circular trail with five tasting stops, where you can sample regional schnapps and liqueurs. If you plan to take part in a tasting, check the booking details before your visit.

Another trail focuses on the railway line: the Sauschwänzle Trail starts at Blumberg-Zollhaus station. After crossing the B27, it follows the railway line on the left as far as the road crossing at the Buchberg Tunnel. Three installations along the trail share information about local heritage, tradition and the production of Black Forest ham. The circular trail with tasting stops and this route therefore offer different themes, rather than forming a single route.

Water and woodland also shape Blumberg’s nature experiences. A forest path leads to the Schleifenbach waterfalls, which plunge 20 metres over three cascades. The Wutachflühen impress with their steep rock spires, ferns, moss-covered stones and gnarled roots. Blumberg also has six interconnected, signposted Nordic walking trails, which you can combine into your own training programme.

Plan your views and your stay

The Nature Cinema on Buchberg at Ottilienhöhe consists of wooden loungers and benches in the open air. In good weather, the view from here reaches as far as the Alps. If this panorama is important to your trip, take the weather conditions into account when planning. The railway, by contrast, runs according to a seasonal timetable. This difference can help you choose when to stay based on the experiences that interest you most.

The time of year may therefore also be a factor when planning your accommodation.

In the wider Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis destination

The Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis also offers more ideas for planning your trip. A 2.5-kilometre circular trail runs around the oval Kirnbergsee and across its dam. The lake is in Bräunlingen-Unterbränd, is part of a Flora-Fauna-Habitat area and has rare plants near its shore. As a cultural landmark, the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet in the Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis was added to the nationwide UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Register in December 2014. The carnival there lasts six days, from Schmotziger Dunnschtig (Fat Thursday) to Ash Wednesday.
