Brigachtal appeals to travellers who want to combine active days with local history. The 23.89-kilometre Brigachtal Route puts a clear focus on cycling; the history trail, local history museum and St. Martin add historical and cultural themes. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether a circular tour or local history should play a bigger part in your stay.

Cycling Through Brigachtal

The Brigachtal Route is a circular cycling tour that starts at the Ringzug stop in Brigachtal-Klengen. It follows the Brigach towards Beckhofen and continues in the direction of the Breg. One section runs along a well-maintained path beside the railway and along the history trail towards Beckhofen. In the Plattenmoos nature reserve, the route follows a well-compacted sandy path towards the forest.

The Brigachtal Route is considered suitable for cycling trips with children. Whether it is also suitable for your particular ride depends on current trail conditions; check these before setting out. Published timetables and live departure and arrival information are available for Brigachtal Klengen station. If you are planning to travel by train, check the information for your travel date.

Local History and Culture

The Brigachtal History Trail has twelve information boards and is designed as a walk through local history. Check the signs on site. The local history museum displays tools and equipment used in crafts and agriculture, as well as household items from around 1900. It also features archaeological finds from the Brigachtal area associated with Roman settlement and Merovingian grave goods. Everyday objects are thus presented alongside finds from much earlier historical periods.

St. Martin hosts the annual Kultureller Herbst programme. It includes concerts, and the individual events vary. Exhibitions of Christian art are also occasionally held at St. Martin. These changing events and occasional art exhibitions complement the themes of the museum and history trail with further cultural highlights.

More to Explore in the Schwarzwald-Baar District

The Schwarzwald-Baar district also offers nature and culture to explore as you plan your trip. In Bräunlingen-Unterbränd, a 2.5-kilometre circular trail goes around the oval Kirnbergsee and across the dam. The lake is part of a Natura 2000 site designated for its flora, fauna and habitats; rare plants grow close to the shore. Another regional highlight is the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet carnival in the Schwarzwald-Baar district: in December 2014, it was added to Germany’s nationwide UNESCO Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Carnival in the Schwarzwald-Baar district lasts six days, from Schmotziger Dunnschtig to Ash Wednesday. For a significantly longer hiking option in the Schwarzwald-Baar district, the 109-kilometre WasserWeltenSteig runs through the region on the German side, from the waterfalls in Triberg to the Rhine Falls near Neuhausen.
