Discover Wangen: Half-Timbered Houses, the Wine Press and Heightside Trails
Accommodation in Wangen
Wangen has several sides to it: a stroll takes you past old half-timbered and Art Nouveau houses, while the Wangener Höhe puts the landscape, trails and views centre stage. There is also the historic Wangener Kelter, a Schiller memorial site and public art. This gives you a range of options when planning your trip—from architecture and local history to trails with views over the valley.
The Wangener Kelter: Historic Building and Market Hall
The historic Wangener Kelter was built in 1713. Its timber roof structure defines the building and gives it a distinctive architectural character. Along with the half-timbered and Art Nouveau houses in the streetscape, the Kelter offers another perspective on Wangen’s architectural history. Half-timbering and Art Nouveau represent different architectural styles; a stroll through Wangen introduces you to more than just one style of building.
The Kelter is also a venue for civil wedding ceremonies, held in its accessible attic floor. If you are planning a ceremony there, check the current booking arrangements. During the colder months, the large Kelter hall hosts the weekly market. If the market is a must on your itinerary, check the latest dates.
Trails and Views on the Wangener Höhe
If you are interested in the landscape, you will find an extensive network of trails on the Wangener Höhe. From the Grenzwandel, you can enjoy views over the Dürrbachtal and explore the trails. The state capital of Stuttgart’s Wandelwege project covers the restoration of walking paths, dry-stone walls, stairways and paved paths in the districts of Wangen, Hedelfingen and Rohracker. The two viewpoints mentioned offer different vistas: from the Grenzwandel, the view extends over the Dürrbachtal; from the Schleifrainwandel, it looks out over the Neckar Valley.
The “Weinberge und Obsthänge rings um die Wangener Höhe” (Vineyards and Orchard Slopes Around the Wangener Höhe) landscape conservation area also gives a clearly defined impression of the landscape. It was designated in 1961 and covers 158 hectares. Its boundaries are important for orientation: the slopes are protected, but not the plateau on either side of the Rennweg. This makes it possible to understand the area’s name in relation to its actual extent, without equating it with the whole of the Wangener Höhe.
The Schiller Linden Tree and Art in the District
In 1905, a small site with a shelter and Schiller linden tree was created on the Wangener Höhe to mark the centenary of Friedrich Schiller’s death. The linden tree was planted on 12 May 1905. The site links a specific date in local history with a commemoration of Schiller, adding a cultural history focus to the landscape trails.
The site is 390 metres above sea level. The recommended route is from Geroksruhe in the direction of Wangen; a sign points left to the Schiller linden tree. As trail conditions can change, check the current signs before setting out. Another artistic landmark is Otto Herbert Hajek’s steel sculpture “Stadtzeichen 69/74” from 1969, located in Stuttgart-Wangen.
Stuttgart as an Additional Area of Interest
The wider destination of Stuttgart offers additional attractions that are not among Wangen’s sights. Stuttgart’s TV Tower was the world’s first television tower made of reinforced concrete. It is just over 217 metres high and has an observation platform and dining options. The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen showcases more than 80 vehicles and 200 small exhibits; through a glass pane, visitors can watch specialists repair historic vehicles. Stuttgart thus offers viewpoints and automotive history as separate interests alongside Wangen’s trails, Kelter and historic streetscape.
Choose Accommodation to Match Your Travel Interests
When looking for accommodation, you can start by deciding which experiences you want to shape your stay—for example, Wangen’s streetscape, the Kelter and its history, or the trails and views on the Wangener Höhe. If you are also planning to visit museums or enjoy other city experiences, include the attractions in the wider destination of Stuttgart in your plans. This way, you can begin your search with the kind of trip you want to take, rather than with a vague idea of a city or countryside break.
