Discover Schura
Accommodation in Schura
Schura reveals two distinctive sides: the upper Schönbach Valley, with its gentle slopes, and a local history that reaches back to the early modern period. The Schönbach, also known to locals as the Elta, flows through the municipal area of Schura. Those interested in the landscape and long-standing village traditions will find concrete starting points here for planning a trip.
The Valley Landscape and History of Schura
The village’s location in the upper Schönbach Valley shapes its landscape. The upper Schönbach Valley is characterized by gentle slopes. The Schönbach also has a name rooted in local usage: residents call it the Elta. Together, the valley and the stream give the landscape a distinctive character, without requiring visitors to follow a particular itinerary.
The village’s history also offers tangible traces of the past. A ledger from the Tuttlingen bailiwick records a chapel in Schura dedicated to Saint Andrew in 1570. Schura’s church was built in 1737 in just over half a year. If you plan to attend a church service, the Trossingen Protestant parish invites visitors to services at Schura Church. Check the current service times in advance.
A local account from the 19th century describes a Roman road that ran through the eastern part of Schura, over the Römlinsbühl and towards Lupfen, known as the “green way” and the “church path.”
Village Festival and Living Identity
Since it was incorporated into the town of Trossingen in 1971, Schura has preserved its identity. The civil parish, the church community and the local associations all play an active and harmonious role in this. The village festival takes place every two years. If a festival date matters for your trip, check in advance when the next village festival is planned.
Culture and Leisure in Trossingen
In Trossingen, the German Harmonica Museum offers an impressive glimpse into the history of musical instruments: more than 25,000 harmonicas and other accordion-family instruments, advertising catalogues and additional documents are displayed accessibly across more than 800 square metres. The exhibits include numerous rare mouth organs, the world’s largest playable button accordion, and the “Hohner Magic – Organa” musical automaton, featuring an accordion and drums, from 1931. The museum brings together a diverse collection, including one especially striking musical automaton.
Alongside dinosaurs, the Auberlehaus Museum explores the history of the town of Trossingen. Another cultural venue is the Kulturfabrik Kesselhaus: the former power station of Matth. Hohner AG opened as an events venue in 2002 and hosts blues, jazz and cabaret events.
The Trossingen Railway offers a distinctive experience of its own. Its line runs from Trossingen Stadtbahnhof to Trossingen Staatsbahnhof, on the railway line between Villingen and Rottweil. The trains that opened the line in 1898 have been preserved and remain operational. This railway history is another point of interest for travellers who are interested in technology and transport as well as the landscape and village history.
Active Days and Seasonal Activities
The Gauger recreational area in Trossingen includes walking and cycling paths, a wildlife enclosure and a playground for young children. For an outdoor swimming experience, TROASE offers a seasonal option: it is located on the western outskirts of Trossingen and operates from May to September. If you’re planning your stay around it, check the dates for the current season before your trip.
The Danube–Neckar Cycle Route connects two long-distance cycle routes, from the Danube to the Neckar, and has only minor climbs. As you plan your trip, consider whether you’d prefer to focus on cycling, historical discoveries, or cultural and leisure activities.
