Grünenbach: Cheese, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Grünenbach
Grünenbach can be explored through a variety of themes: Allgäu organic hay milk and cheese, local history sites, and routes for cycling and pilgrimage. The Eistobel nature reserve is also nearby. This combination gives you concrete ways to choose the focus of your stay.
Taste cheese and learn how it is made
At the Käsbaur cheese shop in Grünenbach, you can sample specialities made from Allgäu organic hay milk. The Käsbaur dairy is also part of the local cheesemaking tradition: it is one of 14 selected dairies visited by the Allgäu Cheese Route. It was originally founded in 1886 by the Baldauf brothers; in December 2020, Käsbaur GmbH & Co. KG took it over.
The dairy processes organic hay milk into hard and semi-hard cheese, as well as butter, quark, milk, and cream. Tours are available by arrangement for groups of 10 or more. Sampling cheese at the shop and arranging a group visit are two different ways to explore the subject of cheese.
Nature routes nearby and in the area
The Eistobel nature reserve is a particularly worthwhile destination near Grünenbach. It is three and a half kilometres long, and four different circular hiking routes let you explore its natural spectacle at your own pace. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season. The Eistobel information pavilion is also the main entrance to the Eistobel and is located right by the Argentobel Bridge between Maierhöfen and Grünenbach.
Cycling and pilgrimage routes also have a direct connection to the area: the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route passes through Grünenbach, and the Jakobweg can be followed here as a pilgrimage route. Together with the circular trails in the nearby Eistobel, these offer different ways to experience the surroundings on foot or by bike.
Sights and history
Right by Grünenbach, the Freigerichtsdenkmal monument on the Buch and the Kult- und Thingstätte are worthwhile destinations. Hohenegg Castle ruins offer visitors an insight into the history of the Allgäu. Grünenbach’s sights also include the parish churches of St. Ottmar and St. Elisabeth.
These places offer several starting points for a cultural and historical stay: a monument, a Kult- und Thingstätte, castle ruins, and two parish churches. This means you can include the region’s history in your travel plans alongside nature and cheese.
Summer performances and activities to enjoy together
Every summer, the Grünenbach Tourist Association puts on several performances of a German fairy tale on an open-air stage in the forest. The event appeals to both children and adults. If you would like to attend a performance, check the dates for your travel period.
Laubenberg-Stüble offers mini golf, darts, and table football for the whole family. Together with the summer performances, these provide two different ideas for shared experiences: a seasonal event in the forest and several leisure activities at Laubenberg-Stüble.
Choose accommodation to suit your interests
Would you like to focus on cheese and how it is made, visit local sights, or make time for cycling and pilgrimage routes? The nearby Eistobel also offers a distinct nature-focused experience. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay around, and tailor your search accordingly.
