Discover Lindau
Accommodation in Lindau
Lindau combines a distinctive island history with experiences ranging from views and architecture to hiking trails, cycling routes and regional craftsmanship. The destinations presented here offer a range of different highlights. Choose where to start your search based on what you would most like to experience.
Towers and lake views in Lindau
Lindau's New Lighthouse is 33 metres tall and reached by climbing 139 steps. The island is also home to the Diebsturm, built in 1380, which long marked the western end of the town's fortifications. The two structures offer different ways to explore Lindau's history: at the lighthouse, its height and steps shape the visit, while the Diebsturm is notable for its former role in the town's defences. If you would rather prioritise a cycling route over individual landmarks, the panoramic cycling loop along Lake Constance near Lindau offers a different perspective. It features views of particularly beautiful spots by the lake and in higher-lying areas.
Forest trails, gorges and winter cross-country ski trails
In the Eistobel nature reserve, the waters of the Obere Argen tumble down the valley over several waterfalls. A three-kilometre hiking trail runs along the waterfalls and through the gorge. A visitor pavilion provides information before visitors descend into the Eistobel. The Rohrach Gorge offers a different landscape: as the largest nature reserve in the district of Lindau, it encompasses wet meadows and litter meadows, springs, and rocky and open areas that provide habitats for rare animals and plants.
In Scheidegg, the Plenterwald Trail shares information about selection forests at nine stations. The route runs from the Kurhaus Scheidegg to just before the entrance to the Waldwelt Skywalk Allgäu. It thus focuses on the distinctive features of the forest. In Gestratz, meanwhile, there are a total of eight kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails for Nordic skiing. This activity is seasonal; conditions can vary from one winter to the next. The region therefore offers a range of nature experiences: gorge hikes, forest learning, views along a cycling loop and cross-country skiing.
Local history, art and craftsmanship
Culture also takes many forms. In Nonnenhorn, the 13th-century Gothic St. James's Chapel stands in the village centre on the old pilgrimage route. There is also a wine press dating from 1591. In Wasserburg, the Museum im Malhaus was built in 1596 and now hosts changing exhibitions. Those interested in the history of craftsmanship can visit the Heimathaus in Gestratz: the 250-year-old smithy was converted into a living history museum and includes a working forge and an exhibition room.
The demonstration distillery in Opfenbach offers a glimpse into another craft tradition. Visitors can see the individual stages of the process, from fruit processing to the finished schnapps ready for sale. Elsewhere in the district, the Allgäu Cheese Route connects various dairies, direct sellers and farm shops. It highlights regional production and marketing, while the demonstration distillery brings a specific production process to life. In Maierhöfen, the sculpture trail combines art and exercise: the approximately five-kilometre circular route passes 17 sculptures and 12 text panels. Artists created them at a symposium and permanently donated them to Maierhöfen for display.
Plan your route and arrival
Nonnenhorn has a centrally located train station. Boat services from the landing stage connect to Lindau, Bregenz, Meersburg, Konstanz and Mainau Island. As boat timetables may change seasonally, it is best to check the times before your trip; rail services and timetables may also change. For cycling tours across the wider region, a cycling map of the district of Lindau at a scale of 1:50,000 provides guidance. It covers the Westallgäu as far as Lake Constance and shows the entire cycling network, including circular routes and long-distance cycle routes.
Find accommodation to suit your travel interests
When looking for accommodation, first consider which experiences you want your trip to focus on: Lindau's architectural history and lake views, trails and natural landscapes, local history, or insights into regional craftsmanship and food culture. The examples differ in theme and activity. Consider whether you would prefer to spend your time exploring the town's history, outdoor trails or cultural attractions; this will help you tailor your search to your own travel plans.
