Isny im Allgäu invites you to switch between culture, city history and seasonal winter sports activities. The former Benedictine monastery, Schloss Isny, is home to three cultural venues; the city wall, towers, gates and other historic buildings also tell the story of the town’s long history. A free audio tour takes you independently through the town’s history and nearby nature, while cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and sledding offer a different kind of holiday.

Culture and City History

The former Benedictine monastery, Schloss Isny, houses the Friedrich Hechelmann Art Gallery, the Isny City Museum and the Municipal Gallery. The castle thus combines its former monastic function with three cultural venues today. The Preacher’s Library, the partly accessible defensive walkway along the Lower City Wall, towers, gates, patrician houses, churches and the castle offer insight into Isny’s nearly thousand-year history. Original loopholes can still be seen along the defensive walkway.

As an independent alternative to the cultural venues in the castle, you can use the free Lauschtour app. It leads along the Isny Oval through the town’s history and nearby nature, allowing you to explore Isny on your own.

Cross-Country Skiing, Downhill Skiing and Sledding

The Isny cross-country trail network comprises around 40 kilometres of officially designated trails; additional routes in and around Isny add around 30 kilometres. The Volksbank Allgäu-Oberschwaben eG cross-country skiing stadium in Isny has sprint and competition courses. Snowmaking and floodlights make it possible to train there even when there is little snow and after dark. Trail lengths and grooming vary by season and may change; snow and lighting conditions can vary. For cross-country skiing, you can choose between the trail network and the sprint and competition courses in the stadium.

The Felderhalde ski area offers a 300-metre descent where beginners can practise the snowplough and parallel turns. The Max-Wild-Arena has a sledding and toboggan run. Both activities are seasonal; check current operating conditions before your visit. Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and sledding offer different options when choosing your winter activities.

A Culinary Stop at the Weekly Market

At Isny’s weekly market, you’ll find food and snacks such as Indian curry, bratwurst, Leberkäse rolls and fish sandwiches, as well as sweet and savoury baked goods. Individual vendors’ offerings may change. The market is another way to complement the town’s history and culture with a culinary break.

In the wider travel destination of Ravensburg: Humpis-Quartier Museum

The permanent exhibition at the Humpis-Quartier Museum spans five buildings in a late medieval residential quarter. The museum opened in July 2009. Regular public tours and individually bookable tours are offered for school classes, children and adults; booking details may change. The Ravensburg experience differs from Isny: while Schloss and the townscape in Isny offer insight into nearly a thousand years of city history, the Humpis-Quartier focuses on a late medieval residential quarter.
