Eichstegen offers a landscape shaped by dry moraine ridges and wet, partly peaty lowlands. The municipality stretches between the inner and outer young moraines; in terms of natural geography, Eichstegen is part of the Upper Swabian Hills. Part of the 50-hectare Altshauser Weiher Nature Reserve also lies within the municipality. These varied landscapes provide a tangible setting for nature and local history during your stay.

Landscape, Trails and Regional History

An extensive network of walking and cycling trails invites you to explore Eichstegen on foot or by bike. This lets you discover the landscape at your own pace.

The Marienkapelle chapel in Eichstegen is one of the area’s historic landmarks. It was built in 1972 to replace a demolished Baroque chapel and belongs to the Catholic parish of Altshausen. The former Hirschegg Castle is also located within Eichstegen’s municipal area. It is considered the ancestral seat of the extinct Hirschegg family. Simple pottery is also made in Käfersulgen.

Community and Special Events

The ecumenical prayer for peace takes place at the Marienkapelle on the first Friday of every month; it is not held during school holidays. Allow about 25 minutes for it. The flexible format may include Taizé songs or similar songs, a meditation or prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, and a blessing. Check the current date before visiting.

Community activities also shape the local calendar. The Eichstegen Rural Women’s Association offers residents and visitors gatherings, talks, craft evenings, hikes and tours, as well as convivial afternoons with coffee and homemade cake. In addition, local associations and the municipal administration organize social and cultural events throughout the year. If you have a particular date in mind, check the current event schedule in advance.

Dining and Getting Around

The Vesperstüble Häuserhof in Eichstegen serves traditional German food and drinks. The Frohe Aussicht restaurant, run by the Koch family, is in Hirschegg, a district of the municipality of Eichstegen. Opening hours may change, so check them for both places before visiting.

The Altshausen–Schwackenreute railway line dates back to 1873/75; there was a stop near the district of Kreenried. Passenger services ended in 1971, and the line was closed, but it has been used for excursion trains since 2011. If you are considering a trip, check the current operating days in advance.

Culture in the wider Ravensburg destination

In the wider Ravensburg destination, the Humpis-Quartier Museum offers another historical highlight. It opened in July 2009, and its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. Regular public tours and tours that can be booked individually are available for school groups, children and adults; check current booking details before making plans.

Schloss Achberg is also in the wider Ravensburg destination. It is the Ravensburg district’s cultural center, stands high above the Argental valley, and showcases Baroque architecture. The castle is open to all visitors and offers educational activities for children. These distinct cultural attractions add to the options if you are planning to explore beyond Eichstegen.
