Missen-Wilhams: Moorland, Hiking Trails and Allgäu Alpine Farming
Accommodation in Missen-Wilhams
Missen-Wilhams brings together activities you can experience firsthand: hiking trails through the foothills of the Alps, a moorland trail, winter cross-country ski trails and the history of Allgäu dairy farming. When planning your accommodation, it’s worth first considering what you want your stay to focus on: hiking, exploring nature, winter sports or regional cuisine. This lets you choose where to stay based on the interests that matter most to you.
Allgäu history on trails and in the museum
The Carl Hirnbein Museum in Missen-Wilhams explores the life and work of Carl Hirnbein and his pivotal role in the development of the Allgäu: from poor arable farming to successful dairy farming. This transformation is also explored outdoors. The Carl Hirnbein Adventure Trail offers insights into the period before and during Carl Hirnbein’s time, as well as life in the Allgäu; you can listen to stories at two audio stations. The trail connects Missen-Wilhams and Weitnau and can be walked in either direction.
There are play areas along the adventure trail. Weitnau’s children’s forest features climbing nets between trees, a swaying gorge bridge, tree swings and a giant climbing spider. The route therefore combines historical insights with sections where exercise and play also take center stage.
Hiking and exploring the Tuffenmoos
Missen-Wilhams offers more than 80 kilometers of hiking trails, including routes with little elevation gain through the foothills of the Alps. If you’d like to combine a nature stop with an engaging look at the landscape, head to the Tuffenmoos Moor Adventure Trail in the village of Wiederhofen. Three short boardwalks lead into the moor while protecting the natural environment; along the way, you’ll learn about the habitats of wet meadows, peat-cutting edges and raised bogs.
From Missen, you can reach the Tuffenmoos via the Luimweg in 45 minutes on foot. Actual walking time may vary depending on conditions. When planning, you can decide whether to choose a hike through the foothills of the Alps or make the route to the moorland habitats a destination in its own right.
Cross-country skiing and downhill options in winter
Cross-country ski trails extend throughout the municipality. Some are interconnected and groomed for both classic and skating techniques. The Bergstätt area ski resort has seven lifts across two villages. It offers easy to intermediate runs, as well as two professional ski and snowboard schools with equipment rental. The Thalerhöhe lifts in Missen-Wiederhofen are specifically included.
For winter planning, the kind of activity you want to enjoy makes a difference: cross-country skiing focuses on the trails and the two grooming styles, while the Bergstätt area offers downhill runs and the ski and snowboard schools mentioned above.
Alpine farming, cheese and regional markets
Numerous alpine huts in Missen-Wilhams invite you to enjoy coffee, homemade cakes and a snack; individual huts’ opening days may vary. On the alpine dairies, milk from herb-rich alpine meadows is processed directly into cheese and butter. During the alpine season, cheese is sold daily at Alpe Schwabenberg near Börlas.
Missen’s Kirbe festival also offers a glimpse of regional market life. The 2026 Kirbe program lists a large general goods and arts and crafts market outside the festival tent, with over 100 market vendors and traders. Offerings include toys, jewelry, clothing, traditional costumes, felted and knitted goods, woodwork and food. Details may change with each edition.
Include other places in the Oberallgäu
The wider Oberallgäu destination offers additional, distinct experiences. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometers of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; a tower elevator takes you to the observation platform on the ski jump tower. In Immenstadt-Bühl, the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Center is located right by Lake Alpsee. Its free-admission interactive exhibition covers animals, plants, their habitats and the protected area’s special features.
You can choose the destinations that best match the experiences you want to prioritize during your stay.
