Wertach combines protected landscapes with traces of craftsmanship and literature: at the approximately 400-year-old hammer mill, you can watch the blacksmith at work. Hiking trails and seasonal experiences reveal other sides of the town. When planning, it is worth considering the time of year: the Sebald Trail is accessible in summer, alphorn performances take place in dry weather, and cross-country ski trails are part of the winter activities.

Landscapes, Trails and a Nearby Swimming Spot

Around two-thirds of Wertach in the Allgäu is protected as a landscape or nature reserve. The hiking trails offer another way to explore the area: around 120 kilometres are signposted, two-thirds of them running through landscape and nature reserves. With its slopes covered in alpine roses, Wertacher Hörnle is known as a natural monument. Nearby, Grüntensee is a swimming destination; conditions at the lake depend on the season.

Themed trails include routes for leisurely hikes that lead from one destination to another. The Sebald Trail offers a special connection between landscape and literature: this approximately 11-kilometre trail is accessible in summer and runs from Oberjoch to Wertach, following in the footsteps of the writer W. G. Sebald, who was born in Wertach. Six steles display excerpts from his work “Vertigo” at the original locations depicted.

Crafts, a Mill and Living Traditions

The hammer mill in Wertach dates from around 1610 to 1620. You can watch the blacksmith at work there. The Obere MĂĽhle also has a long history: it was first mentioned in a document in 1536 and has a history spanning more than 500 years. Since 2018, a mill wheel has turned there once again.

The Wertach cattle drive, or Viehscheid, is held every year alongside a market; the Viehscheid is considered one of the oldest in the region. Alphorn performances are another seasonal experience: from Pentecost to the end of September, they take place in Wertach every Monday in dry weather. Cultural events and outdoor activities therefore vary throughout the year.

Activities from the Valley Lift to the Cross-Country Ski Trails

At Buron, specially designed “BERGaufRODEL” sledges take you uphill on the valley lift. The approximately two-kilometre toboggan run is separate from the ski slopes. If you prefer cross-country skiing, Wertach has around 15 kilometres of groomed trails, with connecting trails to Nesselwang and Oy-Mittelberg.

Guided SEGWAY tours take you through Wertach and the surrounding area. Lasting around 1.5 hours, they offer panoramic views of the Alps and GrĂĽntensee. Tours are scheduled for Fridays at 10:00 and 14:00, or by arrangement; the meeting point is agreed individually. Before travelling, check whether a tour is running on your chosen date and where the meeting point is. You can choose between the various activities according to the season and how you would like to spend time outdoors.

Regional Wines and Cheese

The Allgäuer Gebirgskellerei in Wertach produces blossom wine, berry wine, fruit wine and wines made using special fermentation processes. By appointment, private groups can enjoy wine and cheese tastings featuring selected pairings, organised in collaboration with s’ Molkefässle. s’ Molkefässle also offers a cheese seminar featuring various kinds of cheese.

A wine hike combines outdoor activity with regional delights, including distinctive blossom wines, berry wines and wines made using special fermentation processes. Specific package details may change, so check them before making plans. Whether you are interested in a hike, a cheese tasting or a seasonal tradition, Wertach’s offerings have a range of different focuses that can help you decide when to travel and where to stay.
