Bad Abbach combines relaxation in the water with distinctive historical sites and opportunities to observe nature along the Danube. Kaiser-Therme, Heinrichsturm, FrauenbrĂĽndl and Freizeitinsel each offer something different. During your stay, you can choose between activities, peaceful places and historical discoveries.

Water, activity and nature

Kaiser-Therme offers a wild-water pool, swimming pool and relaxation pools, with water temperatures between 28 and 36 °C. The different pool types and temperatures give you several options for spending time in the water. Check with the operator for current availability.

Kurpark Bad Abbach has a Kneipp pool, public outdoor fitness equipment, a mini-golf course, two large chessboards, table tennis tables, a mini trampoline and a boules court. This means there are opportunities for exercise alongside games and quieter activities. Check local conditions before your visit.

The birdwatching tower on Freizeitinsel, near the tennis courts, offers a different perspective on the landscape. The tower provides panoramic views of an area particularly rich in wildlife and birdlife. It is located in a restoration area on the site of a former gravel pit. The area includes an artificial side channel of the Danube, used by Danube fish as a spawning ground, as well as the canal.

For a canoe outing on the Danube, Kanuerlebnisse Hanika offers a circular canoe route. Bad Abbach is also part of the suggested Weltenburg routes from Kelheim to Bad Abbach and from Bad Abbach to Schierling. If you plan to take one of these routes, check its exact course in advance.

History at distinctive sites

Heinrichsturm is the distinctive landmark of Bad Abbach and the last surviving remnant of a once-mighty castle complex dating from the 13th century. As a remnant of the former castle, it gives the townscape a clear historical connection.

The Löwendenkmal, erected in 1796, commemorates the rock blasting carried out between 1791 and 1794. This work removed a dangerous bottleneck on the Danube road of the time. The monument is best admired from the cycle path along the Danube.

Bad Abbach’s Roman past is also present: Villa Rustica was an estate that supplied the Roman legionary camp Castra Regina from 40 to 357 AD. The site thus points to a long period during which an agricultural estate served the needs of a legionary camp.

Frauenbründl is a pilgrimage church and hermitage dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother of God. The site’s history began around 1700, when former mercenary Georg Pfandstetter settled as a hermit by the five springs. The adjoining candle chapel invites visitors to pray in quiet; check local conditions before visiting.

Landscapes in Kelheim district

Kelheim district encompasses a range of landscapes. Its northern part, including Kelheim, Essing and Riedenburg, lies within Altmühltal Nature Park. The southern part, including Abensberg, Neustadt an der Donau, Biburg, Rohr i. NB and Mainburg, is part of the Hallertau, considered the world’s largest continuous hop-growing region. These regional contrasts add further themes to explore when planning a trip, complementing Bad Abbach’s thermal baths, Danube and local history.

There are eleven hiking trails in the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve. A 13-kilometre hike leads from Essing past Tatzlwurm and the Klausenhöhlen caves, following the Celtic Wall to the Danube Gorge. Another regional discovery is the Altmühltal Archaeology Park, which extends for 39 kilometres. Its 18 sites lie between Kelheim, Essing, Riedenburg and Dietfurt and offer insights ranging from the Neanderthals to the Celts; most sites are directly on the Altmühltal cycle path.
