Discover Neustadt a.d. Donau
Accommodation in Neustadt an der Donau
Neustadt a.d. Donau tells the story of its town through its town hall, church and town wall; in Bad Gögging, Roman bathing history and spa themes are added. This lets you choose different points of focus when planning your trip, from the historic town centre to traces of Roman bathing culture.
Church, town hall and chapel in the town centre
St. Laurentius Parish Church and the historic town hall stand directly opposite each other and form the heart of Neustadt’s town centre. The late Gothic town hall dates from the late 15th century. The two-storey building with its steeply pitched gable roof underwent major renovation in 1977. Architecture and local history meet here, without requiring you to link numerous individual sights into a route.
St. Anna Chapel also tells the story of the town’s architecture: it was built in 1815 as an extension to the town hall. Its decoration and furnishings all date from the time it was built. This combination of an extension and original design makes the chapel a tangible counterpoint to the late Gothic town hall—two different architectural histories at the same historic landmark.
The town wall as a point of reference
With two gaps, the town wall runs around the entire town centre. Chestnut trees have shaped its course for more than 100 years. The wall offers a distinctive view of Neustadt’s centre: it encloses the town centre, while the church and town hall mark its inner heart.
The circular route “Old Rights, Old Paths, Old Walls—History Trail of the Wittelsbach Town of Neustadt an der Donau” follows the town wall. At nine audio drama stops, it presents the town’s history. Visitors interested in the historic town centre can combine architecture and local history on a walk; the audio stops offer a distinct perspective alongside the buildings themselves.
Roman traces and spa themes in Bad Gögging
In Bad Gögging, Roman history dates back to the time of Emperor Trajan. A Roman bathing complex built under his rule can now be visited at the Roman Museum of Spa and Bathing Culture. The excavations of the Abusina cohort fort are also open to visitors as an open-air museum: so-called “time windows” offer insight into the excavations. These are two different ways of exploring Roman history—the bathing complex in a museum and the excavations in an open-air museum.
Bad Gögging is also shaped by its spa offerings. Treatments and baths using the local natural remedies of sulphur water, natural peat and mineral thermal water are available, among other places, at the Limes-Therme. Events take place in the town throughout the year, including regular spa concerts and the Roman festival “Salve Abusina”. If you have a particular day in mind for your visit, check the event dates.
Hop fields, river meadows and regional contrasts
Hop fields and river meadows shape the area around Bad Gögging. You can explore it on foot or by bike. This adds a focus on the landscape alongside the architecture of the town centre and the Roman themes in Bad Gögging. When planning your trip, consider whether you would prefer to focus on historic sites, spa themes or the landscape.
The wider travel destination of Kelheim also has distinct southern and northern characteristics. The southern part of Kelheim district, including Neustadt a.d. Donau, Abensberg, Biburg, Rohr i. NB and Mainburg, belongs to the Hallertau, considered the world’s largest contiguous hop-growing region. The northern part, including Kelheim, Essing and Riedenburg, lies in the Altmühltal Nature Park.
Choose the right focus for your accommodation
When looking for accommodation, the mix of activities you have planned may help you decide: would you mainly like to discover the architecture and town wall, focus on Roman bathing history and spa themes in Bad Gögging, or also make time for the surrounding area, with its hop fields and river meadows? As you plan, choose a destination that suits the experiences that matter to you. If you plan to attend events, check their dates in advance.
