Burgsalach is situated on the upland plateau of the Weißenburg Jura between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park—right on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper German-Raetian Limes. Roman history and outdoor activity shape the experiences on offer: the Roman heritage trail has two route options, and there are also cross-country ski trails and paths leading to Burgsalach. Deciding which of these should shape your stay can be a useful guide when choosing your destination and accommodation.

Roman heritage trail: two routes to choose from

You can explore the Burgsalach Roman heritage trail on a short 5.8-kilometre route, which takes about 2.5 hours to walk, or a long 12.7-kilometre route, which takes about 4 hours. The different distances and estimated walking times provide a concrete guide to fitting the tour into your daily schedule. The trail starts next to the Burgsalach sports ground, where there is ample parking.

The nearby Burgus at Burgsalach also tells the story of the Roman past. According to the latest findings, it was probably a Roman mansio, or Roman inn. The square Roman building measures around 32.6 metres on each side. Its classification as a mansio remains probable—this very distinctive feature makes the Burgus interesting to anyone keen to learn about Roman buildings and their former function.

Cross-country skiing and seasonal conditions

The four trails on the Burgsalach cross-country ski network can be combined to create routes between 7 and 17 kilometres long. Trail 4 is 17 kilometres long and marked blue. Use is free of charge; the Weißenburg section of the German Alpine Club grooms and maintains the trails on a voluntary basis. Markings and conditions are seasonal. Whether the trails can be groomed and maintained depends on snow conditions and the work of local volunteers. It is therefore a good idea to check the current conditions before setting out.

Follow cycle and hiking routes to the Limes

If you would rather explore the Limes on a longer-distance route than on the Roman heritage trail, you can follow the German Limes Cycle Route or the Limes Hiking Trail: both lead to Burgsalach. One focuses on cycling, the other on walking. Alongside the two options on the local heritage trail, you can therefore choose between different ways of exploring Roman history.

Roman heritage in the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination

Roman history is also present in various places throughout the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. The city’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; the Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed. Throughout the district, numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bath buildings bear witness to its Roman history.

For more walks in Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, the Via Biriciana offers a different perspective: the Weißenburg hiking trail follows ancient Roman roads to the Limes. Longer routes are also available on the Altmühltal Panorama Trail and the Altmühltal Cycle Route. The 200-kilometre Panorama Trail runs from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through Altmühltal Nature Park and is certified as a “Quality Trail for Hiking in Germany.” The cycle route runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park. Comparing the walking and cycling routes and their respective lengths can help you decide how you would like to explore the area.

Choose the right focus for your trip

The local routes provide specific information on distance and walking time, while the ski trails can be combined into routes of different lengths. For further trip planning, the district also offers independent hiking and cycling routes, as well as Roman sites in Weißenburg.
