In the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, impressive traces of Roman times meet hiking trails, lakes and opportunities for activities on the water. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. Depending on the focus of your trip, you can concentrate on museums and historic buildings, or explore the landscape on foot, by bike and from the water.

Roman heritage between museum and Limes

Germany’s largest Roman treasure find is on display at the Roman Museum in Weißenburg. The museum is also home to the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. This makes museum visits and information about the Limes the focus in Weißenburg. The city’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths and the partially reconstructed Biriciana fort.

Roman traces can be found throughout the district beyond these named sites: numerous watchtowers, forts and fragments of bathhouses bear witness to Roman history. The story ranges from finds on display and reconstructed parts of a fort to structural remains. Anyone interested in the long history of the Limes can combine these different traces with a visit to the Roman Museum and Information Centre in Weißenburg.

Wülzburg and its distinctive setting

The old Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg offers a different historical perspective. It stands above Weißenburg on the highest hilltop of the Southern Franconian Alb, at 630 metres, and is considered an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Depending on the weather, guided tours are offered there from May to October. If you want to include a tour in your visit, factor this seasonal period into your plans and check the specific dates in advance.

Lake Altmühlsee, Bird Island and water sports

The southern part of the district lies in Altmühltal Nature Park. Lake Altmühlsee is northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. The lake is home to Bird Island, which covers around 120 hectares and where visitors can take ornithological tours offered by the Bavarian branch of the German Association for the Protection of Birds. If you want to plan a tour, check its availability before your trip.

Water sports are generally possible on the lakes in the district; on Lake Igelsbachsee, however, they are permitted only as part of the common use of the water. This restriction is important when choosing a specific lake. If you are considering several water-based activities, take the applicable local rules into account rather than assuming that what is possible on one lake also applies to another.

Hiking, cycling or travelling along the Altmühl

For hiking, the Weißenburg “Via Biriciana” trail follows old Roman roads to the Limes. A longer route is the 200-kilometre Altmühltal Panorama Trail, which follows the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through Altmühltal Nature Park. The German Hiking Association has certified it as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland”. If this formal quality status is a deciding factor in your choice of route, you can check it in advance.

The Altmühltal Cycle Route runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park. For a trip on the water, there is also the Altmühl boat route: it is just under 120 kilometres long between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging. This gives you a choice of different ways to travel and route lengths. Navigation conditions on the boat route may vary depending on the season, so take this into account when planning.

Prioritising experiences when looking for accommodation

When choosing accommodation, it helps to first list the excursions you want to take: museums, Roman sites and the fortress offer a different focus than a visit to Lake Altmühlsee or a longer tour. The stated starting and end points of hiking and cycling routes provide an initial guide; the boat route, in turn, follows the Altmühl. Compare the location of your accommodation with the places and activities that matter for your trip. This lets you tailor your search to your own priorities rather than assuming that a single base will suit every destination.
