Denkendorf combines distinct cultural attractions with opportunities to get active: the “Bavarian Boy and Russian Girl” Friendship Monument is one of its sights, while hiking trails, a cycle route and a pump track add further highlights. This raises a practical question as you plan your trip: should your stay focus mainly on cultural experiences, or on trails and places to be active? The things that matter to you can also help guide your accommodation search.

The Limes, a monument and church art

The Limes runs for 7.2 kilometres through the municipality of Denkendorf. It is therefore a distinctive feature of Denkendorf’s local and cultural landscape. Another attraction is the “Bavarian Boy and Russian Girl” Friendship Monument. Its name adds a distinctive note alongside St. Lawrence Catholic Parish Church, which stands in the centre of Denkendorf.

St. Lawrence has three magnificent Late Rococo altars. Since its renovation from 1979 to 1982, they have been resplendent once again. For culture enthusiasts, the appeal lies in a specific art-historical detail: it is not only the church itself, but also its three altars that shape the image of this Denkendorf landmark. The monument and the church art offer different themes to help you plan a stay around your interests.

Hiking trails, a cycle route and a pump track

The routes can also be distinguished by their focus. The Limes Hiking Trail runs through the municipality of Denkendorf, as does the Via Raetica cycle route. Their names alone make the different focuses clear: one is for hiking, the other for cycling. The two routes thus offer different starting points for planning active days, without treating them as a single trail.

Another named place to get active is the Denkendorf Limes Pump Track at the Zandter roundabout. So alongside the routes, there is also a specific place for activity, with a location within Denkendorf. When looking for accommodation, you can consider whether the cultural attractions, time out on hiking and cycling trails, or the pump track will be the main draw for your trip. These different focuses can help you explore Denkendorf in line with your interests.

In the wider Eichstätt destination

The wider Eichstätt destination offers a range of distinct cultural and nature-related themes. The exhibition at the Jura Museum in Eichstätt focuses on fossils from the Solnhofen Plattenkalk limestone. The museum also displays the original Eichstätt specimen of Archaeopteryx. Visitors with a particular interest in fossils will find a clearly defined collection focus there.

The Willibaldsburg in Eichstätt was built in 1355 by Bishop Berthold Burgrave of Zollern and served as the bishop’s seat until 1725. Of the 420-metre-long castle, its walls and bastions, the armoury, the 63-metre-long gate hall and the Gemmingen building with its two towers have been preserved. These structures give the site a different focus from the exhibition at the Jura Museum: here, the emphasis is on historic architecture and the surviving parts of the castle.

The 1,500 m² bastion garden is also located at Willibaldsburg in Eichstätt. There, the Hortus Eystettensis, destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, was brought back to life after 400 years. Visitors can discover many of its original plant species in the garden. Domplatz, meanwhile, lies on the oldest settled ground in the city of Eichstätt, offering its own historical point of interest.

Eichstätt also has a recurring culinary offering: several times a year, the Eichstätt Genuss-Wirte serve special dishes under the motto “Eichstätt kocht...”, including spicy Altmühltal lamb dishes. For families, the Eichstätt Fossil Trail is another specific option: it is a moderate, 9 km circular route for families. This lets you choose among regional interests according to your preferences—for example, between the museum and fossils, the castle and garden, local cuisine or a longer hike.
