Discover Bad Gögging: thermal waters, Roman history and scenic trails
Accommodation in Bad Gögging
Bad Gögging offers a distinctive experience for a range of travel interests: thermal mineral water in the pools at the Limes-Therme, traces of Roman bathing culture, and trails through parkland and river meadow landscapes. There are also cycling routes with a variety of landmarks. You can decide whether water and warmth, history or outdoor activities will be the focus of your stay.
Thermal waters and Roman bathing heritage
Bad Gögging has three local natural remedies officially recognised by the state: sulphur water, natural peat and thermal water. The outdoor area of the Limes-Therme has four pools filled with thermal mineral water with healing properties. The water comes from a depth of 498 metres and has temperatures of 28 to 36 °C. The Roman sauna at the Limes-Therme is housed in a replica Limes tower with a Roman bathhouse.
The Roman Museum of Spa and Bathing Culture also connects local history with tangible finds. It is housed in the nave of St Andrew’s Church in Bad Gögging’s traditional town centre. The nave stands directly above the central pool of a former Roman bath. At the museum, visitors can see excavations of various rooms in the Roman bathing complex, including the main bathing room with a large bathing pool and four individual tubs.
Walks, parks and landscapes
Several streams, well-maintained paths and small bridges wind through Bad Gögging Spa Park. Two small lakes are perfect places to linger; the park is ideal for walking and relaxing. If you would rather combine a walk with changing scenery, themed walking and hiking trails can be found in and around Bad Gögging. They lead through gentle river meadow landscapes, to peat deposits and sulphur springs, and past asparagus and hop fields. You can choose between a landscaped park and trails showcasing natural and agricultural scenery.
Cycling routes and hiking destination
The routes offer different highlights, too: the Limes hiking trail ends in Bad Gögging, while the Danube Cycle Path passes through the town. The Abens Cycle Path starts in Bad Gögging and follows the Abens through the heart of the Hallertau. If you’re looking for a route with a set endpoint, consider the Limes hiking trail; for a cycling trip, the Danube Cycle Path’s route and the Abens Cycle Path’s starting point offer different options.
Historical highlights in Neustadt a.d.Donau
The wider destination of Neustadt a.d.Donau offers further historical highlights. St Lawrence’s Church stands directly opposite the historic town hall; together, they form the heart of Neustadt’s town centre. The late Gothic town hall dates from the late 15th century. The two-storey building with its steep gabled roof was extensively renovated in 1977. St Anne’s Chapel was built in 1815 as an extension to the town hall and features a consistent decorative scheme and furnishings dating from the time it was built.
With two gaps, the town wall encircles the entire historic centre and has been lined with chestnut trees for more than 100 years. The circular route along the wall, “Old Rights, Old Paths, Old Walls – History Trail of the Wittelsbach Town of Neustadt an der Donau”, features nine audio stations that tell the story of the town. The excavations of the Abusina cohort fort are also accessible today as an open-air museum, with so-called “time windows”.
The wider destination of Neustadt a.d.Donau hosts events in Bad Gögging throughout the year, including regular spa concerts and the Roman festival “Salve Abusina”. If you’re planning a visit for a particular day, it’s worth checking the event dates.
